What we're researching

Our research focuses on the key area of robotic construction. Our research is up to date with the most demanding and challenging areas of the automation, construction-related industry. Our academic team consists of many experienced people, from both academia and industry, so you can be sure what you are studying is theory-practice and reflects the most up-to-date practice.

Dr Sohrab Donyavi who teaches on construction management is an expert in the area of Project Management, Procurement and Technology.

His current area of research is in the field of improving site productivity by using different methods such as Information Communication Technology (ICT) or other templates to minimise human error on construction projects.

He has been working on various construction projects in the UK and other countries besides his academic life to expand his practical knowledge in different construction projects, particularly in construction management. He brings to the department extensive practical and industrial experiences including research and academic skills.

Professor Roger Flanagan is a well-known expert in the field of construction management nationally and internationally. He teaches at and visits many universities and schools of construction management around the world such as Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Sydney, USA, Sweden, South Africa, Istanbul, UK and many others. He has been the past president of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and holds many other responsibilities in construction management areas; he will be with us to cover many zones such as international business and organisational management. He has published books and many other publications.

Mike Hurst who has been involved with the industry for many years including teaching and writing academic books also will assist us with the course. He has a lot of experience and knowledge towards sustainability, organisation management and other areas of construction.

The programme offers several optional and core modules encompassing different areas of construction engineering management. The range of modules on offer is fairly extensive.

Teaching is complemented by coursework and project assignments, to most modules as part of the programme. These are intended to enable you to develop your management judgement and decision-making skills and to have opportunities to apply acquired knowledge to the development of practical solutions and critically evaluate different options in the process.

Students cover both individual and/or group projects and some of them have industrial involvement. The final core module will provide the opportunity to perform a supervised research dissertation acquiring and developing original knowledge in a specific area of construction engineering management.

How you'll learn

The programme will provide learners with a stimulating learning environment where they can learn all about robotic construction.

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will involve textbooks, journal papers, electronic databases and e-learning materials. Your independent learning will also be supported by a range of fantastic, industry-standard facilities. We have modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces and a dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning.

Academic support

Our academic support team provides help in a range of support services to students to help them during their studies. Our Student Hub is the central point that students can contact to access services including academic support, disability support, and more.

Dedicated personal tutor

Our dedicated and specialist staff will support you throughout the course and you’ll be assigned to a personal tutor when you arrive. This is the member of staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL, and show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

Workload

You will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities during the year. These may be lectures, workshops, seminars and individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.

The approximate percentages for this course are:

Year 1: Scheduled teaching - 300 hours. Guided independent study - 228 hours.

This is divided into 48 hours of lecture, 24 hours of tutorials and 228 hours of learning (totalling 300 hours)

Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. While we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 8pm. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

Class sizes

To give you an indication of class sizes, this course normally attracts from 30 to 100-plus students a year (this can vary by academic year). Lecture sizes vary from 40-plus students. However, in the classroom, you will do many of the experiential learning activities in small groups of up to 20-plus students, so you will have a chance to work closely with your peers, practice everything being learned and get feedback.

About the industrial placement year

This course is also available as a two-year masters with an industrial placement year. The industrial placement is designed to address the demands of the profession and give you a competitive edge when it comes to your career. The placement component is up to 12 months in duration, which starts after you have completed the taught modules, and before the dissertation stage. It is ultimately the student's responsibility to secure their placement. The university will offer guidance and support and recommend students to many of our industrial partners who have expressed strong support and interest in the programme. If you are an international student on a Tier 4 visa, your CAS will have a course duration of two years, subject to your meeting the UKVI's standard requirements. During the industrial placement period, you undertake an internship within a partner organisation and complete a zero-credit Industrial Placement Module. The criteria for progression to industrial placement is the successful completion of the MSc taught modules with a minimum 50% pass mark.

How you'll be assessed

Assessments will include portfolio coursework, and group and individual presentations.

The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1: 100% coursework (50% professional portfolio and 50% professional presentation report)

Feedback is normally provided to students within 15 working days, in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy.
