What you'll learn

You will benefit from being taught by academics and industrial practitioners we work with, and have access to the close links we have with major employers to improve your employability in the wider engineering sector.

You will develop management skills in project management and associated digital technologies. You’ll apply theory into practice in the field of project management and associated collaborative digital technologies, and maximise your capability to effectively manage, collaborate and/or lead on technical projects.

You’ll gain extensive knowledge and understanding of the most up-to-date theories and hands-on content related to project management and associated digital technologies. As well as develop practical knowledge in project programming and planning through technology integration. You’ll also develop awareness of project governance and the digitising of project governance and appraise and analyse project risks and associated mitigation measures.

You’ll develop different techniques for analysing and solving real-world problems to develop innovative industrially relevant solutions and develop and apply proficiency in communicating ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.

You'll also:

  • Manage multidisciplinary organisation(s) from various perspectives such as client, contractor, designer, and supplier.
  • Gain an understanding of the interoperability of different communication technologies and their role in construction projects. 
  • Evaluate Information Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities and associated implementation systems and evaluate and assess the key issues of implementing ICT to support the sharing of data in construction projects to develop techniques for sharing data in construction projects.

How you'll learn

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will involve textbooks, journal papers, electronic databases and e-learning materials. You’ll also have access to the library and Moodle. Your independent learning will also be supported by a range of fantastic, industry standard facilities.  

Academic support
Our academic support team provides help in a range of support services to students to help you during your study. Our Student Hub is the central point where student can contact to access all services that include academic support, disability support, to mention a few.

Dedicated personal tutor
Our dedicated and specialist staff will support you throughout the course and you’ll be assigned to a personal tutor when you arrive to oversee. This is the member of staff, who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

Workload
You will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities during the year. These may be lectures, workshops, seminars or individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.  

The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1: Scheduled teaching - 300 hours; guided independent study - 228 hours. 

Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 6pm. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

Class sizes
To give you an indication of class sizes, this course normally attracts 30-50 students a year (this can vary by academic year). Lecture sizes are normally 40-plus students. However, in the classroom, you will do many of the experiential learning activities in small groups of up to 20 students, so you will have a chance to work closely with your peers, practice everything being learned and get feedback.

About the industrial placement year

This course is also available as a two-year masters with an industrial placement year. The industrial placement is designed to address the demands of the profession and give you a competitive edge when it comes to your career. The placement component is up to 12 months in duration, which starts after you have successfully completed the taught modules, and before the dissertation stage.

It is ultimately the student's responsibility to secure their placement. The university will offer guidance and support and recommend students to many of our industrial partners who have expressed strong support and interest in the programme. 

If you are an international student on a Tier 4 visa, your CAS will have a course duration of two years, subject to your meeting the UKVI's standard requirements. During the industrial placement period, you undertake an internship within a partner organisation and complete a zero-credit Industrial Placement Module.

The criteria for progression to industrial placement is the successful completion of the MSc taught modules with a minimum 50% pass mark. 

How you will be assessed

Coursework will include portfolio coursework, group and individual presentations, and professional reports (a Presentation Report) 

The approximate percentages for this course are:

  • Year 1: 100% coursework, (50% Professional Report and 50% Presentation) 

Feedback is normally provided to students, within 15 working days  in line with UEL's assessment and feedback policy.
