Your future career

Your future career

Your master's degree will provide several career opportunities.  From the knowledge, skills, and experience developed during the course, previous students have achieved strength and conditioning positions with professional sports teams, including Premiership football clubs, university sports teams in the USA, and other industrial places.

The course has been designed to cover the content of external body qualifications such as the UKSCA and NSCA making the preparation for these external certifications a natural progression.

Previous students have also built and developed successful personal training companies working with recreational to elite sportspeople.

Additionally, students have continued their education further, applying for PhD and research positions.

Students will develop their skills and knowledge in a directly applied context, further supported by industry experience through the placement module. This will ensure that students are 'employment ready' in their knowledge, skills, and experience. The strong industry experience and contacts of our staff team also mean that students will be well-connected to potential jobs as they arise.

In addition, students will be encouraged to make full use of the range of employability resources available through the Careers Centre and LinkedIn Learning.

Explore the different career options you can pursue with this degree and see the median salaries of the sector on our Career Coach portal.

The course was an eye-opener for me. I’d had strength and conditioning as part of my life as an athlete but I learned so much more on the course that really would have helped me with my career.

What you'll learn

You will learn the theoretical of strength and conditioning which will include the development of muscular force, the use of technology to measure performance, athlete profiling and the design of annual training programmes.

This will be applied in subsequent modules where the knowledge will be applied to create effect training programmes including the development of lifting techniques, and development of shorter-term training programmes.

This knowledge, skills and application will then be put into practice via a work placement focusing upon strength and conditioning practices.  By the end of this students will have followed a theory to applied to practice model, which would enhance their employment opportunities.

Additionally, a key focus of the course is researching within strength and conditioning.  The research skill module will lead into a double credit project module, which will allow you explore deeply your project area and develop individual researching skills and practice.

How you'll learn

We are investing in key areas beyond your studies including our career services, library, and well-being, to be available both face-to-face on campus and online with many of these available 24/7. We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Students are supported with any academic or subject-related queries by an academic advisor, or module leaders.

If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such as academic writing, English, maths, or statistics, our academic tutors offer workshops, drop-in sessions, and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential. You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses.

Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater to your every need. UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs).

How you will be assessed

This programme will consist of six modules (180 credits) over the course of 12 months/three terms.

All modules are individual (30 credits) except the independent research project which is a double module (60 credits).

Students work on a theory-to-practice teaching strategy.  Initially, students are taken through a theoretical underpinning knowledge of strength and conditioning, and research methods, followed by practical application of the theory, before beginning the process of application by a research project and applied work-based placement.

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable.  There is a diverse range of assessment methods that include essays, presentations, case studies, professional development, reflective work, and practical activities. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides.
