Overview

Course modules

In term 1, the Education MA offers several optional modules allowing you to specialise your learning. Critical Approaches to Inclusive Education is ideal for those with a teaching background. It looks at theories of inclusion and personalised learning within UK educational contexts to develop accessible and challenging teaching strategies for all. For those interested in innovative pedagogical approaches, Creativity, Imagination and Learning explores the theoretical and practical implications of creativity and imagination in educational settings. Additionally, Teaching and Learning in Multicultural Contexts focuses on developing an understanding of multicultural pedagogies, reflecting on methods to support and enhance the engagement of multilingual learners and promote diversity in education.

In Term 2, the Education MA offers optional modules designed to enhance leadership and professional development. Leading Learning equips you with the knowledge and understanding of strategic actions to improve teaching and learning. It will include qualitative and quantitative enquiry approaches to support educators in their professional contexts. Alternatively, Mentoring and Coaching in Education: the mentor as an agent for change focuses on developing a critical understanding of the theories, models, purposes, and practices of mentoring and coaching within an educational context, enabling participants to evaluate their effective use for various educational goals.

In Term 3, the Education MA offers optional modules designed to deepen pedagogical understanding and assessment practices. The Pedagogy module focuses on understanding the concept of pedagogy through relevant theory and practice, aiming to develop an appropriate and relevant educational model for individual contexts. It will provide tools to address specific pedagogical issues systematically. Alternatively, the Assessment for Learning module explores assessment practices within diverse educational systems, examining them through the lenses of assessment for, of, and as learning. This module aims to develop an in-depth understanding of the relationship between assessment and learning, focusing specifically on the theory, principles, and practices of Assessment for Learning.

NOTE: Modules are subject to change. For those studying part time courses the modules may vary.

How You'll Learn

The MA Education course uses an approach to learning that involves a four-stage process: needs analysis, planning, learning and development, and continuous evaluation. This approach might relate to your own teaching practice or be used to identify and plan changes on a whole school basis.

To support each stage of this process, you will have expert input from UEL lecturers as well as engaging with key readings. You will then work with your fellow students in discussion groups to exchange ideas, perceptions, and experiences.

Tutors provide guidance and support, but we place an emphasis on reflection and collaborative learning. With the typical pace of a teacher's working life, the time and opportunity to reflect and learn in consultation with teachers from other schools is a welcome resource on this course.

All modules allow you to personalise the assessment task to focus on an area of interest or need in your own context. The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to carry out a small-scale research project designed to solve an identified problem.

The high level of accessibility to your tutor is one of the things that make us different and is often commented on in module and course feedback from students.

The school-based MA Education is particularly popular with local schools.

"Schools have loved our offer of going to them rather than teachers having to travel to UEL at the end of the school day," says Course Leader Dr Margaret Etherington.

"We fit the modules around what the school needs to ensure impact. The timetable and study materials are all negotiable."

"It's all about overcoming the barriers to enable school-based students to complete their MA. And they still have the library access and all the advantages of being UEL students."

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures or workshops, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve skills development through online study, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects and preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, and specialist facilities, such as game labs, the library, the full Microsoft Office software, including MS Teams, and Moodle: our Virtual Learning Environment.

Academic support

Our academic support team provides help in a range of areas - including learning and disability support.

Dedicated personal tutor

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.
