    What we’re researching

At UEL, our research spans a diverse range of legal fields, addressing contemporary challenges and shaping the future of legal practice. Our academics are engaged in cutting-edge research in human rights, international law, legal technology, financial regulation, employment law, and dispute resolution. Key areas of focus include law and artificial intelligence, policing and cybersecurity, immigration and refugee law, and mediation and arbitration. This research informs our teaching, ensuring you engage with real-world legal issues and emerging trends, equipping you with the critical insight and analytical skills essential for a modern legal career.

    Your future career

The LLM Legal Practice at UEL is designed to support your journey towards qualifying as a solicitor, equipping you with the legal knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience needed for success. Through specialist SQE preparation, expert-led teaching, and hands-on legal training, you’ll gain the confidence to excel in the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and beyond. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete qualifying work experience at the UEL Legal Advice Centre, giving you valuable insight into real-world legal practice. Whether you aim to become a practising solicitor or pursue a career in legal consultancy, corporate law, human rights, or commercial litigation, this course provides the support, experience, and expertise to help you achieve your goals.

    Industry links

The course has a key industry link with BARBRI, an international provider of SQE preparation. While UEL delivers and assesses its own SQE support modules, students will also have access to BARBRI’s online learning resources to aid their SQE studies.

Additionally, students can gain qualifying work experience through the UEL Legal Advice Centre, providing hands-on exposure to legal practice.

    Graduate employers

The course has also been reviewed by the Law Advisory Board, which includes judges, solicitors, and legal professionals from firms such as Carter-Ruck, Irwin Mitchell, and Duncan Lewis, ensuring it aligns with industry needs.

    Job roles

This course prepares students to undertake the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). If graduates go on to successfully complete their SQE after their studies with us, they will be able to practice as a solicitor.

    Further study

After completing the LLM Legal Practice, your next step towards qualifying as a solicitor is passing the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE 1 and SQE 2). This course provides structured academic and practical support to help you prepare, but you will need to sit these exams separately through the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Alongside passing both assessments, you must complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE), which can be gained through placements, legal roles, or pro bono work - such as the UEL Legal Advice Centre. Once you have met these requirements and satisfied the SRA’s character and suitability test, you will be eligible to apply for admission as a qualified solicitor.
