The University of East London is a fantastic place to study as an international student. The diversity of our student population, from more than 135 countries, sets us apart from other universities. International students make up between 12 and 15 per cent of our intake each year.

Our practical-based approach – learning by doing – plus our outstanding teaching staff and wealth of contacts within a variety of industries ensure that your studies are richly rewarding. Many of our courses have internships built into them and carry international accreditation, which helps to make an employable individual upon graduation.

Our team of recruiters regularly travel to countries to meet with parents of prospective students. They are also available to give presentations via Skype or over the phone. Applying to UEL from abroad, particularly if a student lives outside the European Union, involves different entry requirements to those which apply for UK-based students. Find out more in the advice for parents of EU and international students section below.

We have a range of funding options for students outside the European Union. For full details, go to our international scholarships page. For more information on funding for international students, please visit our fees and funding page. If you are the parent of a prospective student from the United States, you can find out more on our loans for American students page.

We have a dedicated visa team to help prospective students with what can be a complicated process. For example, if the prospective student is a single mum, the team can help them apply for a visa both for themselves and their family.

Our Docklands and Stratford campuses are both less than a 30-minute train ride away from the center of London – or nine minutes on the high-speed train from Stratford International. Our campuses are also connected to the center of the capital by 24-hour buses, so it could not be easier to get around.

International students often need assistance with speaking and understanding the English language. We are here to help with this. For full details, visit our main international page.
Applicants from outside the UK and students whose first language is not English must have a good standard of English, as evidenced by internationally recognised qualifications such as IELTS. These requirements vary by course so you’ll need to check the webpage of the course you are interested in for specific information.

We accept a wide range of qualifications from across the world – from country-specific awards to internationally recognised qualifications. When applying, students should not try to convert qualifications to a UK equivalent – but just provide the full award title, subject and grades/scores as they appear on certificate(s).

If the qualification is from an EU country, please contact our Applicant Enquiries team by phone on +44 (0)20 8223 3333 or by emailing They will be able to let a student know whether their qualifications meets our requirements. If the qualification is from outside the EU, check out the information on our country pages about entry requirements and acceptable qualifications

Visa assistance: We have a dedicated visa team on hand to assist students throughout the process.

Applying: To guide students and parents through the process of applying we have created videos to simplify the process.

If you are a parent and would like to see the campus we can arrange campus tours or you can use our virtual tour facility.

You can visit our international student starting page for more detailed information.
If your son or daughter will be attending UEL and living in London, rest assured that their safety and security is our top priority.

Our campus is monitored by CCTV at all times and we have an on-campus security team that patrols the Student Village 24 hours a day. In addition, students will find a telephone in every dorm room with a dedicated emergency line available to assist at any time.
Students coming to London from abroad need a lot of information, whether it is about using local transport, finding good places to shop or accessing all the support services available. At UEL, we pride ourselves on helping students get used to all the basics of living in a new country.

We run a dedicated Welcome Programme for international students that begins a week before the similar service that helps home students adjust to their new life.

    Our Welcome Programme includes:
    • airport pick-up
    • orientation
    • SIM card
    • registering with a doctor
    • registering for a UK bank account
    • making friends
    • supermarket trips
    • tours of London.
This programme is designed to make sure our international students are well settled before their classes start.
