London Sustainable Materials Lab
London Sustainable Materials Lab
The London Sustainable Materials Lab (LSML) is a new research and innovation facility within the University of East London’s Sustainability Research Institute. It drives collaboration between academia, industry, and communities to accelerate the development of low-carbon, circular, and bio-based materials for the built environment.
Building on UEL’s internationally recognised work in sustainable materials, LSML connects research in architecture, engineering, and environmental science with industrial practice. The lab supports early-stage innovation by helping designers, SMEs, and researchers move from concept to validated prototypes, providing expertise in materials characterisation, processing, and performance testing.
Equipped with advanced tools for microstructural, mechanical, and hygrothermal analysis, LSML enables studies across construction materials, waste reuse, soil and water quality, packaging, and textiles. It also integrates with UEL’s digital manufacturing facilities for precision fabrication and prototyping.
LSML is committed to inclusive and open collaboration, offering accessible routes for students and partners to engage with research that advances the transition to a more sustainable material future.
