NGOs and Public Support

In this section of the Resource Hub, our aim is to bring together resources focusing on the range and scope of NGO resources that are available for supporting refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. This can include focusing on core online resources for the public support of refugees including access to issues including how to find where to go for further issues relating to issues like welfare; childcare; law; etc. However, our aim is not to provide our own guidance in these issues, but to facilitate participants' access to a central portal where reliable information on these topics can be found.
OLIVE Course Partners
Article26 is a project of the Helena Kennedy Foundation with the main aim of promoting access to Higher Education for people who have fled persecution and sought asylum in the UK.
Universities of Sanctuary is an initiative to celebrate the good practice of universities welcoming asylum-seeking refugees into their university community and fostering a culture of welcome and inclusion for all.
Migrants Resource Centre has worked for over 30 years to help migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers overcome the barriers that prevent them from fully participating in British society. In this time, we have helped tens of thousands of people secure protection in the UK, regularise their immigration status, learn English, and find work. We have helped people who are stateless and have other nationality issues secure a more certain future.
RSN helps young refugees, asylum seekers and survivors of trafficking to build more hopeful futures through education.
Evelyn Oldfield Unit was established in 1994 with the aim to provide, develop and coordinate specialist aid and support services for Refugee and Migrant Community Organisations and individuals. We endeavour to increase their capacity and potential for meeting the needs of their communities and to support RMCOs to set up partnership initiatives with mainstream agencies and to engage their members with the wider community.
At Breaking Barriers, we offer a unique approach to helping refugees in London find meaningful employment and thus rebuild their lives and integrate into their new homes.

Employment
RISE: As part of Building Better Opportunities, Renaisi is running a project called RISE (Refugees Into Sustainable Employment), which offers a holistic approach to breaking down the barriers that may prevent refugee communities from accessing the workplace.
We are working with a number of partner organisations in order to deliver a tailored programme, and the services on offer include the following:
- Work-based ESOL (delivered by The Redbridge Institute)
- Accredited training such as Adult Social Care, Retail, Construction & Customer Service
- A package of wellbeing activities (delivered by City & Hackney MIND)
- Skills and employment-focused workshops
- One-on-one support from an Advisor
- Workplace and volunteering opportunities (in partnership with Business in the Community & Volunteering Matters)
- In-work mentor support (delivered by TimeBank)
- Participants will also have their travel costs reimbursed
RISE launched on April 3, 2017 and is operating across ten boroughs throughout North and East London including Newham, Greenwich, Barking & Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge, Haringey, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Havering and Enfield. We can deliver our services and activities across these boroughs.
We are currently reaching out to organisations that work with refugees within those boroughs in order to offer our services and provide additional support to participants. Likewise, we are encouraging organisations that offer services and provision across the boroughs to get in touch so that we can look at ways to work together.
NGO Support Networks
This section will focus on facilitating access to the NGO support networks which are available in these areas and to signpost where further help and assistance can be found.
- RAMFEL is a charity that supports vulnerable migrants to access justice and that provides vital support in moments of individual crisis.
- Afril is a grassroots charity in Lewisham, London, working with refugees and asylum seekers to relieve poverty and isolation advance their education and provide services to improve social integration.
- Hackney Migrant Centre provides free advice for asylum seekers, refugees and recent migrants. Helps with the life in the UK test.
- Refugee Action Helps refugees build a safer life in London
- London Welcome Project is a not-for-profit, member-driven social centre for asylum seekers and refugees.
- Council for Assisting At-Risk Academics (CARA). Originally founded in 1933 in response to Hitler's decision to expel hundreds of leading scholars from German universities on racial grounds, today CARA helps academics and scientists flee from discrimination, persecution, suffering and violence in some of the world’s most dangerous places.
- Refugee Council: As one of the leading charities working with asylum seekers and refugees in the UK, the Refugee Council is committed to working towards creating a fair, humane and effective asylum system that provides protection and enables refugees to rebuild their lives in safety.
