Seminar One
On 1 September 2008 Professor Christine Woodrow, School of Education, University of Western Sydney and Dr Fran Press, Faculty of Education, Charles Sturt University, NSW gave a presentation on the corporatisation of childcare in Australia, entitled: 'Investigating the reach and implications of the corporatisation of childcare in Australia: the giant in the playground'. To open the discussion following the presentation, Professor Collette Tayler, Graduate School of Education, the University of Melbourne provided a response and analysis.
Seminar Two
On 15 December 2008 Professor Carol Vincent, Professor Stephen Ball and Dr Annette Braun from the Institute of Education, University of London, spoke on 'Childcare, choice and social class', presenting findings from their recent research on childcare choices in a working-class and a middle-class neighbourhood in London. Dr Gillian Paull, Senior Associate at Frontier Economics provided a discussant response to start off the discussion following this seminar.
Seminar Three
On 9 February ICMEC had the pleasure of hosting Professor Kathy Sylva from the School of Educational Studies at the University of Oxford. She gave a presentation on: 'Childcare settings and childcare quality.' The presentation led to a lively debate.
Seminar Four
On 23 March 2009, the Dutch childcare market was the focus of the presentations and audience discussion. Rob Vergeer, CEO, and Leontine Diemel, Manager Quality and Control, of small childcare group Triodus NL, based in the Hague, the Netherlands, spoke on 'Childcare legislation in the Netherlands.' In advance of the general discussion, responses were provided from a childcare business and an academic perspective by Carole Edmond, Managing Director, Teddies Nurseries, part of the BUPA Group and by Kazem Chaharbaghi, Professor of Management, UEL Business School.
