About us

The Centre for Geo-Information Studies is an established research centre of the University of East London. We specialise in all aspects of geo-information science, systems and engineering applied broadly to areas of the physical, social and cultural environment. In particular, we have an international reputation for data integration and analysis, modelling and simulation. Our remit is to work in diverse partnerships both internal and external to the University in all areas of endeavour where data analysis has a role.

  • Geo-Information Science:

Concerns generic issues in the handling and analysis of geo-spatial data such as data structures, visualisation, spatial data analysis, spatial data quality and the propagation of uncertainty.

  • Geo-Information Systems:

Concerns the use of specialist software in mapping and data mining applications in such diverse areas as the environment, crime, health, education, transport and business.

  • Geo-Information Engineering:

Concerns the design and construction of specific spatial information solutions such as in predictive modelling, spatial decision support and location-based services.

Specific areas of application expertise that constitute the hallmark of CGIS are:

  • GIS and external simulation modelling:

GIS, whilst good at organising and integrating diverse spatial data sets, have limited in-built analytical capability. Coupling with external models such as those used in environmental sciences, civil engineering, business and the social sciences, radically extends the specific application areas and affords the possibility of simulation modelling and constructing spatial decision support systems.

  • Spatial data mining:

with the exponential rise in the size of databases, their increasingly complex structures and the rate at which they can accumulate on even a daily basis, there is an urgent need for techniques that can mine very large databases for the knowledge they contain; spatial data mining techniques are those developed for the discovery of meaningful patterns from large data sets where an important dimension of interest is geographical location of events.

  • Location-based services:

a new and fast-growing application of geo-information engineering arising from recent convergence in ICT, the Internet, position fixing and spatial databases to provide information and data services to mobile devices customised to the specific location and context of the recipient.

The Centre undertakes teaching on programmes in the relevant Schools, MRes, supervision of MPhil and PhD students, short courses, continuing professional development (CPD), contract research and consultancy.
