Afua Hirsch is a writer, broadcaster, barrister and human rights development worker. She is the Social Affairs and Education Editor for Sky News and was previously a correspondent for the British newspaper The Guardian.

21 Questions: Domestic Abuse Special - Monday 8 May 2017
Strength With In Me Foundation (S.W.I.M) have organised, with the University of East London's Noon Centre, the highly-acclaimed talk series '21 Questions' to present a Domestic Abuse Special which will take place in May and recorded for online broadcast this June. This particular episode is a carefully constructed Domestic Abuse Special which will see a group of incredible campaigners, MPs and experts gather to discuss domestic abuse before the camera.
Why? New research has revealed that:
46% of our young people are already being subjected to relationship abuse in their teenage years
Domestic abuse leads to, on average, two women being murdered each week
Accounts for 16% of all violent crime (Source: Crime in England and Wales 04/05 report), however, it is still the violent crime least likely to be reported to the police.
Has more repeat victims than any other crime (on average there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the police).
Charity Strength With In Me Foundation (S.W.I.M) has been making waves in the domestic abuse pandemic for over a year, during which time we have formed an All-Party Parliamentary Group to have healthy relationships taught as compulsory in all UK schools as a step towards promoting better relationship and life choices. Finally, this has been achieved. Still, as our founder Dr Diahanne Rhiney has said openly in The Huffington Newspaper 'Let's celebrate progress... and then get to work.' Combined with 21 Questions' reputation for bringing real life issues to the forefront via their unique open conversation approach, this event is set to tackle domestic abuse head on; discussing the things that the media is reluctant to and posing questions to campaigners and MPs that are rarely asked.
Join us to be a part of the audience for this live discussion which is centred upon giving a voice to the general public in 21 Questions' usual 'Nothing Is Taboo' style. The audience is the heart of this episode, we will ask you to submit your questions beforehand and actively take part in shaping the world around us through debate and conversation.
On Monday, May 8 hosted by UEL's Noon Centre for Diversity and Equality, at the University of East London's University Square, Stratford Campus. We will seek to explore domestic abuse and tackle what can be done in parliament, policy, practice and the wider community. So far, our incredible team of panellists includes Celia Peachey (campaigner and daughter of Maria Stubbings), Sian Hawkins (Head of Public Affairs and Policy for Women's Aid), Kathy Evans (CEO, Children England) and The Right Honourable Baroness Hamwee (who presently sits on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Domestic Abuse). Our chair for the evening is Strength With In Me Foundation (S.W.I.M) founder Dr Diahanne Rhiney.
