Open Access
We aim to improve research quality by fostering an open culture, not just with respect to open access publications and open data, but also open research design and project planning. This is consistent with our ambition to be exemplary in our practice of co-creating research projects with the stakeholders and beneficiaries of the research.
As part of this commitment the UEL Research Repository preserves and disseminates open access publications, research data, and theses created by members of the University of East London.
Research Ethics and Integrity
UEL is a signatory to the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, 2019. The commitments within the Concordat call on universities, research institutes and individual researchers to ensure that their work is underpinned by rigorous high standards. All employers of researchers must produce an Annual Statement on how they are meeting the requirements of the Concordat which is presented to the institution’s governing body. You can find UEL’s Annual Statement here:
Concordat to Support the Career Development Of Researchers
The Concordat for the Career Development of Researchers, commonly known as the Researcher Development Concordat (RDC), sets out sector expectations to create the very best culture for researchers to develop and thrive. The RDC aims to improve the research environment, and career and professional development opportunities for researchers across the UK. The University of East London signed the Concordat in November 2023. One year later, we introduce the University's Action Plan, articulating our commitment to embed the core values and principles of the RDC into each stage of our researcher’s journey.
Our Action Plan was developed by the RDC Steering Group, and our approach to creating and implementing the support, training, policies, and processes to enhance our research culture and researcher experience as set out in the Action Plan will continue to be one of co-production and continuous consultation through working groups, workshops, and open fora.
Research Support
Comprehensive support for research is provided by the Office for Postgraduates, Research and Engagement (OPRE).
The Research and Development Support (ReDS) team provide support for the development of research grant funding applications and grant management. Details of our internal processes and other information can be found here: Research and Development Support (ReDS).
To contact our ReDS team, please email: r.a.support@uel.ac.uk.
Researcher Development Programme
The Researcher Development Programme provides workshops, development sessions and network activities to support UEL researchers in their professional development. The programme is co-ordinated by the Office for Postgraduates, Research and Engagement with sessions delivered by academics and professional services staff from across the university and by a wider group of external stakeholders. Sessions include grant writing, research ethics, data management, networking, interdisciplinary approaches and public and community engagement.
Public and Community Engagement
Our approach to public and community engagement starts with communities, to tune into the challenges and the potential here in east London and globally and to build platforms for engagement around the issues which affect our communities and where we can contribute to positive impact.
We have established a Community Consultation Group to steer our public and community engagement activity and approaches. Email civic.engagement@uel.ac.uk to connect with our public and community engagement team.
