The Neighbourhood Health Hub
The Neighbourhood Health Hub
The University of East London’s new Neighbourhood Health Hub is transforming how communities access care.
Located at the heart of our Stratford Health Campus, it brings together prevention, education and innovation to improve health outcomes for everyone in Newham and beyond.
A one-stop shop for better health
Opened by Health and Social Care Secretary the Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP, the Hub is the UK’s first university-led primary care pilot comparable to a university hospital in the community.
It’s designed as a one-stop shop where residents can access a range of practical, prevention-focused health and wellbeing services - all under one roof.
Here, local people can find:
- Physiotherapy, sports therapy and podiatry for injury recovery and mobility.
- Counselling and wellbeing sessions, including mindfulness and parenting support.
- Health checks and screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and heart health.
- Free musculoskeletal therapy sessions (MBST) for eligible residents as part of clinical trials.
A passport to good health
The Neighbourhood Health Hub is designed to be a ‘passport to good health’ for our community, reflecting three vital goals: helping families build healthy foundations from a young age; supporting people to stay active and in work; and reducing health inequalities for everyone in our community.”
Professor Amanda Broderick, Vice-Chancellor and President, University of East London
The Neighbourhood Health Hub is built on a simple belief: that good health should be accessible, sustainable and shared by all. We want every resident to have the knowledge, confidence and support to look after their own wellbeing and that of their families - not just when they’re unwell, but every day.
Through practical, prevention-first services and accessible learning, the Hub helps people understand the small steps that make a lasting difference - from managing stress and mobility to improving heart health and nutrition. By combining education with hands-on care, we’re empowering individuals to sustain their own good health and make informed choices that fit their lives.
Learning by serving
At the Hub, students gain real-world experience while supporting local residents to live healthier, more active lives. Under professional supervision, they deliver health checks, counselling sessions and community outreach - strengthening local capacity while building their own clinical skills and confidence.
This “learning by serving” model is now central to how we teach and train at UEL. It ensures that education directly benefits the community, and that every student who trains here leaves ready to make a difference from day one in the NHS.
Innovation on the doorstep
The Hub is also a testbed for innovation, embedding research and technology into everyday care. Through partnerships with the NHS, local authorities and organisations such as provider MBST UK, we’re trialling advanced, non-invasive therapies and digital health tools designed to improve joint, muscle and bone health.
Our students work alongside professionals to deliver care and develop the skills needed for modern healthcare - not in isolation, but within the community they will one day serve.”
Robert Waterson, Executive Dean, School of Health, Sport and Bioscience
By piloting new approaches in a real community setting, we’re generating evidence and insight that can be shared nationally - helping shape the future of integrated, prevention-first healthcare.

Part of a bigger picture
The Neighbourhood Health Hub is part of UEL’s Stratford Health Campus, alongside the Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub, the forthcoming Academic Health Building, and the planned Medical School (subject to GMC approval, opening 2027).
Together, these facilities are redefining healthcare education and delivery in east London - creating a pipeline of skilled, diverse professionals ready to serve local communities.
Why it matters
It’s not right that where you live determines how long you live in good health. This groundbreaking Hub brings healthcare closer to the communities that need it most.”
The Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
The University of East London’s Neighbourhood Health Hub embodies the principle that good health should be local, accessible, and equitable. By combining clinical care, education and research, we’re helping to build a future-facing health system that’s rooted in community need and ready for the challenges ahead.
