Sponsored nursing associate programme launched with three universities

Imperial College Healthcare has launched a sponsored nursing associate programme in partnership with the University of East London, Buckinghamshire New University and The Open University. The programme aims to give members of the local community the opportunity to begin a nursing career at the trust – while developing the nursing workforce.

The nursing associate role is a support role that bridges the gap between healthcare support workers and registered nurses, helping with the delivery of care under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Dr Jane Perry, dean of Health, Sport and Bioscience at the University of East London, said, “We are delighted to be in partnership with Imperial College NHS Foundation Trust. This is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students to access the nursing associate course and have practice placements with a prestigious trust which is looking to develop its own workforce.”

Successful applicants to the programme will undertake a two year UCAS entry nursing associate programme and gain the chance to undertake their nursing associate placements at one of Imperial College Healthcare Trust’s hospitals, and associated community partners, with dedicated support from their nursing education team.

The first group of successful applicants will start the programme in October 2021. The successful applicants will benefit from fully funded second year tuition fees. This also comes with a guaranteed offer of a registered nursing associate post at one of Imperial College Healthcare Trust’s hospitals when they complete the programme and the opportunity to work on their bank as a healthcare support worker during the programme.

Jan Goldsmith, lead nurse for education and lead for the nursing associate programme at Imperial, said, “We are delighted to give members of our local communities the opportunity to begin a career in nursing with us. We are one of the biggest NHS trusts in the country with a fantastic tradition in nursing practice, education and research.

“We have partnered with a choice of three universities which run well-established nursing programmes – giving students flexible options to choose from, including traditional scheduled teaching, online learning and blended approaches, across different locations.”

If you are interested in training to become a nursing associate alongside your current role at the Trust, there is an apprenticeship which allows you to continue in your current role while studying.

The closing date for applications for this intake is 8 August 2021, with joint interviews between the universities and the trust taking place during August.
