UEL and Eastbury Manor House collaborate on exciting programme of arts events
Eastbury Manor House in Barking hosts UEL creatives
The College of Arts, Technologies and Innovation at the University of East London (UEL) is collaborating with Eastbury Manor House in Barking on a programme of events that explore the “Nature of Place”.
UEL arts students and staff will exhibit work throughout the year at Eastbury Manor, an Elizabethan grade I listed National Heritage site.
The new residency programme was launched in March with a series of four exhibitions which occupy a number of rooms and outside spaces within the manor.
Dr Garry Doherty, the project’s manager, said, “The collaboration aims to promote a commitment to civic engagement by establishing a team of bridge builders that can transcend the boundaries between the academy and the local community.
The four installations are Dying Forêt - a sculpture installation by artist and UEL MA Fine Art tutor Samuel Zealey; Linger On, a diverse mixture of sculptural and film installations by MA Fine Art student Farah Ishaq and MA Fine Art graduates Simona Pesce and Evelina Zakharov; A Memory Of Place, from a team of UEL Architecture and Design foundation students and tutors; and {This Must be The Place}, a series of paintings from ATI Technical Support Officer and MA Fine Art student Rob Reed.
As well as providing a unique exhibition space, the programme will also offer opportunities to UEL students, staff and the local community to develop skills and engage in conversations about their heritage and its place in the community.
Dr Doherty said, “The mission of the team is to deploy a series of innovative art and design projects that investigate and explore the themes and strategies of 'Place Making' in and around Eastbury Manor.
“This will enable art and design professionals, local industry and our students to foster powerful real-world community connections, develop employability skills and nurture relationships to engender active citizenship enabling vital civil democracy.”
This is an ongoing programme and UEL will invite creative professionals, staff and students to participate in the residency programme throughout the year. If you wish to submit a proposal please contact Garry Doherty (g.doherty@uel.ac.uk).
The four exhibitions described above will be on display at Eastbury Manor House, Eastbury Square, London IG11 9SN, until 30 March.
