The Mayor of Newham has recognised the tireless volunteer work that a University of East London (UEL) physiotherapy lecturer has done for the local community.
Mayor Sir Robin Wales was in attendance as UEL’s Dr Patricia Smith and other volunteers received Community Builders awards at a ceremony at The Old Stratford Town Hall in Newham. Dr Smith was recognised for her work giving free health workshops on arthritis at the Stratford Library.
Dr Smith said, “There are many residents in Newham who suffer from arthritis and need simple advice on exercises to overcome the pain, discomfort and loss of mobility associated with this condition both at home and at work. I felt that this was a practical way to bring ‘patient centred practice’ and ‘community based rehabilitation’ to the community.
“Furthermore, I think that UEL has a central role to play in building communities and partnerships in east London as part of our commitment to civic engagement. That is why I am a community builder.”
Patricia was nominated for the award by Community Neighbourhood Officer Trevor Mbatha.
Trevor said, “I nominated Patricia to be one of Stratford and West Ham’s Community Builders because of the work she has undertaken in developing a well-being programme in Stratford Library. She has used her physiotherapy skills, knowledge and experience to contribute to the well-being of Newham residents.”
