UEL student Events Management team wins awards at European hospitality competition
UEL group is the only UK team to advance to the final eight
A group of University of East London (UEL) Event Management students won two awards at a student hospitality management competition that drew competitors from across Europe.
UEL’s Team Empire won the 'Best Team Spirit' award, while team member Cariad Williams was part of a separate group that won the ‘Best Idea Pitch’ award, at the EMCup 2018 in Maastricht, Holland on 18 and 19 February.
Team Empire, comprised of Event Management students Cariad, Melania Adinolfi, Sarah Boulter and Courtney Phillips, were the only competitors from the UK to make it through to the final eight teams.
Cariad said, “When the ‘Best Ideas’ award was announced I was overwhelmed to think I was part of the winning team. I felt extremely proud.”
The event, which was themed ‘High Touch vs High Tech’, pitted 33 teams from across Europe against each other. The teams competed in rounds in which they were tasked with developing and pitching ideas around the use of technology in the events and hospitality sector, while taking care to maintain quality service with a ‘human touch.’
All teams were re-arranged into new, mixed groups for the ‘Best Idea’ round, where they were had 30 minutes to create a technological concept that could be implemented in a hotel in the future.
Cariad led her team around the idea of focusing on mental health, coming up with a concept that would allow hotel guests to design and change their hotel rooms with the aid of interchangeable walls and surroundings.
Cariad explained, “This would enable the guests to upload pictures of what they felt was calming and relaxing for them and their friends or family before they came to stay. This could include being able to select a colour scheme for furniture and seating areas to reflect their needs and moods.”
Team Empire were supported by UEL’s Lisa Wyld, Head Of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management, and Birte Schmitz, Lecturer in Tourism.
Lisa said, “Empire winning the award for best team spirit really sums up the students’ approach to the overall competition. I received great feedback from the business jury about the team and their overall performance. The accolades are really well deserved.”
