Corinne Humphreys overjoyed at Commonwealth Games selection
Advertising student will be joined in Australia by alumni Adam Gemili and Bianca Williams
UEL student Corinne Humphreys has described her athletics successes over the past year as “mind-boggling” after she was named in the England squad for the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in April.
Corinne, who studies Advertising at UEL, has been picked for the England women’s 4x100 metres relay team following a breakthrough season as a track sprinter.
She attributes her success to the absence of any injuries this year after previously being hampered by physical problems.
“This year's outdoor season was all about competing fit,” says Corinne. “I have only had three years in total that have been injury-free in my track career.
“It's a very surreal feeling. It was only eight months ago that I failed to win a medal at the BUCS Indoor Championships, so to see hard work pay off in such a major way is just surreal.
Corinne will be joined in Australia by former UEL students Adam Gemili and Bianca Williams. Adam will compete for England in the men’s 4x100 metres and individual 100 metres while Bianca will race in the women’s sprint relay and 200 metres.
Both Adam and Bianca will be hoping to add to their Commonwealth medal collection after enjoying success at the last Games in Glasgow in 2014.
Adam won silver medals in the relay and 100 metres in Scotland while Bianca won bronzes in the relay and 200 metres.
The success of Corinne, Adam and Bianca underlines UEL’s status as one of the top choices for elite athletes. Last year, the University climbed to third in the UK track and field rankings.
The University offers scholarships to elite athletes in numerous sports. With the Olympic Park nearby, and world-class facilities on campus, it is the ideal location to study while training. For more information on High Performance Sport at UEL please visit: https://www.uel.ac.uk/sport/scholarships
