UEL nominated for Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award
University recognised for innovative review of its portfolio of academic programmes
UEL has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education (THE) Leadership and Management Awards 2016 for the innovative way in which it carried out a review of its portfolio of academic programmes.
The University has been nominated in the category ‘Outstanding Strategic Planning Team’ alongside the universities of Chichester, Derby, Glasgow, Leicester and Sheffield Hallam.
The winner will be announced at a prestigious awards dinner and ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on June 23, which is expected to be attended by more than 1,000 guests, including politicians and senior figures from the Higher Education sector.
Professor Nora Colton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) said, ‘This is fantastic news for the University and a ringing endorsement of the bold and innovative methodology that was used to evaluate the performance of our programmes in terms of their delivery and attractiveness to students and their likely success in the future.”
It was Professor Colton who had the idea of applying a rigorous analytical model to all programmes and, after researching existing planning models, developed a bespoke methodology with the support of the University's Strategic Planning team.
Gideon White, Acting Director of Strategic Planning, said, “The resulting approach produces ‘bubble charts’ that give colleagues an instant visual way of considering three questions about our programmes simultaneously in a rigorous and systematic way.
“Are we offering what the market wants, how well are we delivering what we offer and how viable are our programmes?
“The approach also supports how we think about strategies for recruitment, learning and teaching, estates and facilities and so on."
