UEL win three league titles in a day to extend sporting domination

Forget Super Saturday. The University of East London’s sports teams have created their own special day: Winners Wednesday!

A great 24 hours for UELSports saw the Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Football and Men’s Basketball teams all clinch their respective league titles as nine of the ten UEL teams in action picked up victories.

With a 3-0 triumph over the University of Sussex at SportsDock, the Women’s Volleyball team sealed the Premier South title in their first season in the league. Impressively, they are still unbeaten this season with just one game to play. They have not even dropped a set.

The Men’s Football 1st team have won their league for the seventh year in succession following a 2-1 win at home to their nearest rivals, the University of Hertfordshire. That result opened up a seven-point margin at the top of the South Eastern 1A table in a season boasting seven wins and just one loss.

Finally, a second consecutive Premier South title was secured by the Men’s Basketball team. Having lost to second-placed Brunel University in their previous match, the team bounced back with an 80-65 triumph at the University of Oxford.

David Cosford, UEL’s Director of Sport, said “This is another amazing chapter in story of the rise of sport at UEL. We now boast some of the best teams in the UK. Our football, volleyball and basketball teams as well as tennis, athletics and swimming are firmly leading the way in the south.”

“Competitive sport in universities displays an extremely high level of skill and many of our students are performing at a professional standard.

“These results give even more reason for students to choose to study and play sport at UEL, and we hope more can join in September to keep our momentum going.”
