Perfection for Women's Volleyball team at Student Cup qualifiers
UEL team win all three matches in straight sets to reach the final stage
A weekend of total dominance saw the University of East London’s Women’s Volleyball 1st team win all three of their matches in straight sets during the Volleyball England Student Cup qualifiers at Leeds University.
Seeded in Group F, the UEL team beat Durham 2nds, Sheffield 1sts and the hosts, Leeds 1sts, who were spurred on by a partisan home crowd, to see them qualify for the finals.
UEL’s first match-up came in the shape of a well organised Durham 2nd team out, who gave them their sternest test of the tournament, eventually defeating them 2-0 (25-14 & 25-10).
Newly appointed coach Simon Loftus was pleased with the team’s early performance, explaining: “We wanted to come out here in our first game and execute the things we have been working on in training. If we did that, we knew we could beat anyone in front of us.”
Building on the momentum from their first game, UEL played the second match against a good Leeds side. The women were unfazed by the hostile atmosphere as they recorded yet another 2-0 victory (25-13 & 25-11) to put them in form control of Group F.
The team finished off their day in perfect fashion with yet another convincing 2-0 (25-8 & 25-7) win against a very strong Sheffield team.
Loftus was ecstatic with the result, saying: “The Sheffield game just shows that we are ready to compete against anyone and we have enough talent and depth to make good things happen.”
“I’m very happy that we were able to execute things well against all three teams and most importantly no one picked up any injuries.”
The weekend’s performance puts UEL in strong contention for the finals, which take place in February at the University of East Anglia against some of the top teams in the country such as Bournemouth and Essex.
