Jane Calvert-Lee proud to receive honorary doctorate
After an illustrious career in the business world, Jane Calvert-Lee spoke of her pride at receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of East London (UEL).
“I’m thoroughly overwhelmed to have been awarded this from UEL – a university I love and admire,” said Ms Calvert-Lee. “I see the doctorate as an excuse for redoubling my commitment to UEL in the years ahead.”
Ms Calvert-Lee was presented with a Doctorate of Business Administration at a ceremony held at indigo at the 02 on Tuesday, 17 November.
Having held a number of senior positions with the Confederation of British Industry, Ms Calvert-Lee is a lifelong champion of greater boardroom opportunities for women. She was herself a member of the University of East London’s Board of Governors.
She has always encouraged close ties between universities and companies, and continued to do as a UEL Governor.
“So much is gained when business and academia cooperate,” she said. “I see value in practitioners lecturing students. They see their work and can choose future interns and employees. Students learn the latest commercial practices and trends. It’s a win-win.”
Ms Calvert-Lee was also a board member of Tomorrow’s People – a small charity that helps some of the most challenged people in society to rebuild their lives through training and jobs.
“It was a joy to hear how we’d helped some of our clients out of the most terrible circumstances,” she said. “It was training and continuous improvement that was usually the key to unlocking latent talents.”
