UEL students graduation

Star athlete Adam Gemili, the European 200 metres champion, has a made a 7,000-mile round trip from his warm-weather training camp in Qatar just so he can attend his University of East London (UEL) graduation ceremony.

Adam jetted into the UK for less than 24 hours so that he could receive his degree in Sport and Exercise Science with his university friends at indigo at the O2.

Immediately after the two-hour ceremony, Adam headed straight for Heathrow Airport to catch a flight back to Doha, Qatar, where he and his training group are preparing for next summer’s Olympic Games in Rio di Janeiro.

Adam admitted it was a gruelling trip but said he would not have missed it for anything.

“I would say this is right up there with all the things that I’ve achieved in my career so far in athletics and making the Olympic team,” he said.

During his time at UEL, Adam had to juggle his studies with his athletics training but managed to excel in both. He gained a 2:1 and also became the first Briton in history to run the 200 metres under 20 seconds and the 100 metres under 10 seconds.

He said: “I’ve had the best three years of my life at UEL. I’ve made friends that I will keep for the rest of my life and had experiences that I would not have had anywhere else. It’s been tough trying to balance being an elite athlete but I’m so happy that I stuck with it. Now I’m here celebrating a degree. I’m so pleased.”
