What you'll learn

Mechanical engineering, arguably the mother of all engineering disciplines, is one of the most popular student destinations here in the UK and beyond. The discipline applies engineering, physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to design, operate, analyse, manufacture, and maintain industrial systems consistently and reliably.

The MSc course is designed to meet the increasing demand for general engineering professionals with advanced technical skills in mechanical engineering.

The course will provide fundamental and advanced engineering knowledge and a hands-on skill set that a 21st-century engineer needs to solve technically complex issues with a multi-disciplinary, innovative and strategic approach.

This course is ideal for learners from home and overseas and, in particular, professionals working in the general engineering and technical/management sector or those who wish to work in these sectors.

Offering a placement year as well, the programme is designed using the Engineering Council's attributes of a Chartered Engineer. This ensures that the core skills required for a 21st-century competent engineer, as elaborated by the Engineering Council, are well-integrated into the programme's curriculum.

How you'll learn

Your academic team includes a dynamic mix of research-active industrial practitioners, renowned researchers, chartered professionals and technologists, whose combined knowledge ensures you leave with a comprehensive understanding of advanced mechanical engineering practice and research.

You will be setting your own research-based learning where you will evaluate and critique recent data, literature and case studies as well. You will be delivered guest sessions by industry specialists (e.g. Atkins, Costain Skanska, Laing O'Rourke, HS2 project etc.) to further widen and deepen your knowledge of real-world issues and how they link to the concepts, theories, principles, values, philosophies and hands-on practical elements taught during the course.

How you will be assessed

All assessments are designed to ensure that the MSc Mechanical Engineering course will equip you with all of the skills required to progress within the engineering industry, giving you a major competitive edge. Apart from the coursework and exams, you will be assessed by using technology and other diverse modes. Your learning journey will be further supported by using technology-enhanced learning as you will also participate in learning the latest industry-standard software.
