Information for Applicants

social work

The University of East London is the principal social work training provider in east London. We have strong links with local social work agencies and employers, who often offer UEL students newly qualified social worker posts.

Our BA (Hons) Social Work was rated third in London for overall course satisfaction and is a very popular programme. Our social work programmes are taught by experts in the field. All teaching staff are professionally qualified and registered social workers, and lectures are lively, highly participative and interactive. We are accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council to award professional qualifications in social work alongside academic degrees. Qualifying programmes meet government requirements, which include stipulated numbers of supervised practice days in local statutory and voluntary social work agencies.

Social Work Test Information

Thank you for your application, and congratulations on being selected to attend the first stage of the Social Work assessment. Please read the following information carefully.

All applicants applying to study Social Work will be required to take an in person written test and subsequent interview. Applicants who are successful in passing the Social Work test will generally be interviewed 2 weeks after the test date. We are unable to arrange Skype or any other online means for our test and interviews.

Photographic ID such as a passport or driving licence will be required on the day of your test and interview. Please bring a pen for your written test. Please note that if you do not have photographic ID with you, you will not be able to sit the test.

To confirm or decline your attendance, or to request an alternative date, please log on to your UEL application portal. There is high demand for a limited number of places, so if you are unable to attend, please do let us know so that we can offer your place on the test to another applicant.

If you require further information about the test, please refer to our Admissions handbook. You may find the FAQ section particularly helpful.

As previously explained, there is always high demand for the limited number of places on both our BA and MA courses.  Therefore, if you request an alternative date, unfortunately there is no guarantee that we will be able to offer you one, as the subsequent dates may already be fully booked.  We do understand that it is not always possible for applicants to attend, so we will do our best to accommodate you if you do need another date, but cannot guarantee that one will be available.  So to avoid disappointment, please do endeavour to attend the date that you have been offered.
The test will take place on our Stratford campus. Please report to the main reception desk, the entrance is on Water Lane. Staff will direct you to the test waiting area from there. The address of the campus is University of East London Stratford Campus, Water Lane, London E15 4LZ.

Directions to the campus can be found here.

Please arrive no later than the start time stated in your invite. If you are late, you will not be permitted to enter the test, as it will disrupt the other applicants who would already have started. Please ensure that you plan your journey effectively and arrive in good time.

You are welcome to bring children to the interview/test day but they must be accompanied by another adult. UEL staff cannot look after children while your interview/test is taking place and children must not be left unaccompanied anywhere on UEL premises. It is not appropriate for children to be in the interview with you as this would limit the ability for both you and the interviewer to hold an open conversation about future studies at UEL; similarly, children are not permitted in test/exam environments.

The test is sat under exam conditions, and is to assess your standard of written English and knowledge of the Social Work profession. The test lasts one hour.

If you have any requirements, such as additional exam time or assistance due to a disability, please contact us on 020 8223 3333 at least 3 working days before the test so that we can make these arrangements for you.

Assessment for both the BA and MA courses is a 2 stage process. Applicants who pass the entrance test will be contacted via the UEL application portal and invited in for a second stage interview at a later date. Further information will be provided within the invitation.

If you are unsuccessful and have not passed the test, the outcome will be communicated via your UCAS track.
We can only accept one application per cycle. However, you are welcome to re-apply for the following year if you have been unsuccessful previously. Please be aware that due to changes in entry requirements and demand for places, you will not necessarily be selected every time, so please ensure that you submit a strong application each time that you apply.
It is rare for the BA or MA courses to still have vacancies at such a late stage, as we accept applications for almost a year in advance of the course start date. However, if there are still places available, the entry requirements remain the same and we do not accept repeat applications from anybody who has been previously unsuccessful during the same cycle, as stated above.

We hope you have found this information useful. If you have any further questions, please call 020 8223 3333.

We look forward to seeing you at the test, and wish you good luck!
