The campus is great. It offers everything you need – the gym, SportsDock, the canteen. And everything is lovely and new. There are lots of international students here, so you are already part of a community. The accommodation is perfect. I had my own bedroom and there’s a laundry and everything else you need, so you don’t need to spend extra money.

The best city for students

London is the world’s most popular international student city, with more than 100,000 international students from 200 different nations. Londoners speak over 300 languages – more than any other city in the world. Wherever you are from, you will always feel welcome – and inspired

London is the world’s most exciting city - and east London is at the very heart of the action.

The award of the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics to London has led to an extraordinary regeneration in the east of the capital.

Our Stratford campus is right next to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the massive in-flow of public and private investment has transformed the local area.

Stratford is now home to Europe’s largest urban shopping mall – Westfield Stratford City – which is packed with shops, restaurants, cafés, bars and a multi-screen cinema.

Elsewhere in east London, you will enjoy the unique creative vibe generated by the many artists, musicians and designers who live and work here. You can soak it up for in the galleries and studios, cafés and restaurants of places like Shoreditch and Spitalfields.

If sport is your thing, the Olympic swimming pool and velodrome are both open to the public, while the Olympic stadium will soon be the home for Premiership football team West Ham United.

For an alternative entertainment option, the 02 Arena – the world’s largest music venue – is also right on our doorstep.

    East London

London may be steeped in history but it’s also a rapidly changing city at the cutting edge of business, science and art.

We are the world’s No 1 city for foreign companies expanding their businesses, and we have three times more European multinational headquarters than any other European city. It means there are rich opportunities for work placements and internships.

London is a city that offers something for everyone – iconic buildings and monuments, world-renowned galleries and museums, famous sports venues and theatres, well-known shopping districts and a vast choice of bars and restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets.

All this will be right on your doorstep if you study at the University of East London. Central London is less than half an hour away from our two campuses by public transport – or just seven minutes if you travel by high-speed rail from Stratford.

It’s hard to think of a more exciting place to live and learn.

    Campus life

Coming to UEL as an international student is a great opportunity to meet people from around the world. We have more than 90 clubs and societies, one of London’s best gyms, two student support hubs, a variety of cafes and restaurants, an on-campus bar and a lively programme of entertainment events.

At UEL, you will enjoy a varied entertainments programme, including outings, live music, comedy and dance nights, quizzes and competitions.

To break the ice, Freshers’ Week includes a series of nightlife coach trips, where you’ll have the chance to experience some of the biggest and most popular entertainment venues in London.

The UEL Students’ Union (UELSU) runs a lively social calendar throughout the year. The Underground Bar at our Docklands campus plays host to regular comedy, karaoke, ‘open mic’, sports and party nights attracting DJs and bands from across the musical spectrum

Also popular are the regular games evenings, run by UEL computer games students, as well as film screenings of classic and recent movies.

If you fancy a change of scene, we also organise occasional day trips outside London by coach, which are particularly popular among international students. Recent destinations include Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor and Brighton.

      Entertainment

You will not have to go far to find good food. We cater for all cultures and tastes on campus at our range of restaurants and cafés.

At our Docklands campus, The Edge refectory and the Munch café serve a wide variety of cuisines, including vegetarian and halal. There’s also a Costa and a Starbucks, while our Origins café provides light snacks. We also have on-campus bar – the Underground Bar.

Once a week we host a lively ‘street food’ event at our Docklands campus. Moroccan lamb skewers and the Philly cheese burgers are among the favourites.

At our Stratford campus, there is another Starbucks and The Green restaurant. Outside the campus, the Stratford area is packed with dining options.

If you prefer to cook at home, there’s an on-campus shop for essentials plus two superstores within walking distance of Docklands. When you arrive for your first night at UEL, we arrange trips there so you can stock up.

      Food and Drink

We maintain a security team on campus, 24 hours a day. Our security officers patrol the Student Village regularly to ensure you are as safe and secure as possible.

You can read more about security on campus in our Accommodation section.

      Safety on campus

There’s no better way to make friends and get involved in university life than to join a student society. You will have close to 90 to choose from at the University of East London.

There’s our International Student Society, for students from all over the world, where you can sign up for trips to comedy clubs, parties, underground music venues and movie nights.

We have nine societies for individual nationalities, from the African Caribbean Society to the Nigerian Union. Each will offer you support, a network of people you can instantly relate to, and plenty of socialising.

UEL has 26 sports clubs - from competitive cheerleading to volleyball - some of which train using the iconic facilities at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Our SportDock complex is one of the best indoor sports facilities in London. Team USA were so impressed by it that they chose it as their base for the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics.

There are almost 50 other non-sporting clubs on offer. They range from faith groups to academic societies, from the DJ Society to the ‘Barking Bateria’ samba band, from our Student Radio Society to our Anime and Manga Society.

The best time to sample the range of opportunities on offer is during Freshers’ Week, when many of university’s clubs and societies set up stall at the Freshers’ Fair in the main hall of SportsDock.
