What we're researching
Our academic team is passionate about furthering the knowledge around creative practice and how it impacts the fashion industry.
We have a particular focus on sustainable design within fashion and textiles, and our researchers at UEL are collaborating on a project to analyse and identify new materials and decorative techniques.
Joe Hunter, our senior lecturer for BA Fashion Design, has been committed to the ideology behind environmental design since the early 1990s. He has recently created a new soft sculpture, fashioned from denim offcuts and trash, which serves as an oversized soft toy designed to teach children about environmental preservation.
We are also exploring the potential of new digital technologies to enhance in-store customer engagement and revolutionise the fashion shopping experience. Kent Le, the leader of our MA International Fashion Business programme, is conducting his PhD on the use of augmented reality in Fashion Promotion. His research has been presented at international conferences, including the International Conference on Contemporary Marketing Issues.
Beatrice Newman, our Head of Department and Course Leader for BA Fashion Design is an entrepreneur who has launched her own brand, Korlekie. The brand specialises in unique made-to-order clothing that has been worn by celebrities like Alesha Dixon, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding, and Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage. Beatrice's research focuses on building a sustainable fashion business that prioritizes the development and preservation of craftsmanship using both traditional handcraft and digital technology.
