A poet and journalist in exile

University of East London’s school of Arts and Creative Industries proudly presents: Adnan Al Sayegh and Jenny Lewis 

Adnan Al Sayegh was sentenced to death in Iraq in 1996 and has been in exile ever since and in London from 2004. A poet, Adnan has also been a soldier and a journalist. His longest poem ‘Uruk’s Anthem’ gives voice to the despair of war and exile. His poetry has been widely translated and has won international awards. It is lyrical, rich and heartbreaking.  

Uruk’s Anthem has been translated into English by Jenny Lewis and published by Seren Press under the title ‘Let Me Tell You What I Saw’ (2020). Jenny Lewis is a poet and translator. She has had four collections of poetry published by Carcanet Press, writes poem cycles and plays and teaches writing at Oxford University.
