Celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month
The theme for this year's history month is 'Body, Mind and Spirit'
LGBTQ+ History Month runs from 1-28 February 2021 and to celebrate, the University of East London is hosting a series of events designed to raise awareness within our community.
1-28 February: Walk/Jog/ Sashay to your favourite LGBTQ+ attraction with the Moves+ app
From Monday 1 February, you will be able to challenge yourself and the rest of the institution (especially the LGBTQ+ Network) with travelling the distance to your favourite LGBTQ+ landmark or city throughout the course of the month. These will range from easy to hard. Pick your destination and get walking/jogging or sashaying! Of course, do not physically walk to these places, just walk the distance it would take. Keep this updated on the Moves app; see below a list of suggestions:

- Soho – Brighton Pier (52.8 miles)
- Brighton Pier – Manchester Canal Street (228 miles)
- The Stonewall Inn New York City – San Francisco (2944 miles)
Monday 1 February: Life in the pandemic – Chinese gender friendly mutual support community
Queer China UK plans to establish a safe space for UK-based Chinese queer people by the mutual aid network. Through around three-month activities with skill sharing, peer exchanges and knowledge learning, strong connections would be made within the Chinese community which help them to have a great time in the UK.
Monday 8 February 5-5.40pm: An Evening with Pride in London
Come along and join us for an evening with the Directors of Pride in London, wondering what the future holds for Pride? Or simply want to know how to be involved? Then pop along for a quick discussion with the team. The event will be held between 5-5.40pm on 8 February. Sign up here.
Wednesday 10 February 6-6.30pm: Story time with Mama G
Every Wednesday and Sunday, until Wednesday 10 February, Mama G is fun for all the family. She will tell stories about loving who you are and being who you want. Join her for half an hour of songs, stories and sequins. Join in via the Mama G Facebook page.
Friday 12 February 6-7pm: Rock and Roll Bingo – Pride Edition
The University has teamed up with Pride in London and Rock and Roll Bingo to offer you a games night like no other, no zoom required! All you need is your mobile phone to download the ‘Rock and Roll Bingo’ app and knowledge of them Pride classics we all know and love. Prizes for lines and a full house up for grabs. A pin will be sent to you a few days before to download the game and have the night of your life.
Wednesday 17 February 5-6pm: LGBTQ+ Network Social (staff and students)
Pop along to check in with the networks and have a good old chin wag over some tea or coffee or something much stronger! Sign up to attend the session here.
Wednesday 17 Feb 5.30-7.30pm: LGBTQ+ Parenting Event with Fadi Safieddine and QMUL
Part of the LGBTQ+ month, Fadi Safieddine UEL Lecturer alongside the QMUL community invite you to the LGBTQ+ parent event. If you are an LGBTQ+ parent or thinking of becoming a parent, please join us. If you are a child raised by LGBTQ+ parents, we would love to hear from you too. We will have invited speaker who will update us on the changes in the UK regulations to support LGBTQ+ parenting. You will be hearing from two LGBTQ+ parents with very different experiences. This event is open to everyone, so please come and join us in the discussion.
Wednesday 17 February 7.30-10.30pm: Lesflicks LGBTQ+ History Month Film Fest
Join us for a special watch party for our LGBTQ+ History Month Film Festival on 7 February from 7.30-10.30pm. This years theme is Mind, Body & Soul, and we have two 50-60 minute programmes of short films to engage, entertain and inspire our community. Sign up here.
Monday 22 February 7-8.30pm: Black Gay Ink - Coming Out from Lockdown
This initiative launched in October 2020, offering a safe space for Black gay men to learn more about positive personal and professional development. Please join us for an evening of new writing, music, comedy, and photography on 22 February from 7-8.30pm. We'll also be promoting two new Zoom groups set up to support Black, gay, men - Black Connection and Pure Melanin Gathering. This event will take place on Zoom, and will be convened by course leader and tutor, T.Fairclough and Spread the Word's director, Ruth Harrison.
The University is supporting Stonewall Housing on their fundraiser, #ConnectingTheLetters.
This is a chance for people to receive a letter from a celebrity LGBTQ+ individual every week for the month of Feb. Supported by Royal Mail, proceeds going to Stonewall Housing. Click here to find out more.
