Black AcadeMY UEL!
Welcome to the first event of the Black Academy at University of East London
You may be familiar with the large and vibrant black student body at UEL but did you know UEL also has a substantial Black Academy consisting of academic and services staff from lecturers to professors and senior managers? The Black Academy at UEL is one of the largest in the sector and has a special focus and passion for issues of social justice, racial equity, anti-racism and Black representation. The Black Academy is committed to supporting all student study endeavours and wellbeing.
Earlier this year, UEL was awarded a Bronze Race Equality Charter (REC) Mark which is an award that aims to support and encourage universities to work towards race equality. The award commits UEL to identify and reflect on barriers experienced by minority ethnic students and staff and to enable more students to graduate with good degrees and better employability opportunities. One of our REC internal surveys showed that for those staff and students who identified as an ethnic minority, the diversity of the institution was a considerable factor to them joining, their sense of belonging and their visible potential of achievement.
The Black Academy at UEL therefore have created a space of opportunity where you can get to know us better, and we can get to know you. You are warmly invited to come along to hear from some of our Black Academy about how to survive and thrive your journey as a student and beyond!
The event is at the University Square Stratford, USG.17, starting promptly at 5 pm. After the presentations and discussion there will be a networking reception-so why not come along and say 'hello'?
Spaces are limited so register ASAP and PLEASE let us know if you are unable to attend!
We very much look forward to seeing you there!
