The Hackney Pirates pop-up writing sessions
Charity will host writing sessions for children on Stratford campus
THE PIRATES ARE COMING!
Education charity The Hackney Pirates is coming to UEL's Stratford campus to run pop-up immersive writing sessions with children aged 9-13 from local schools to help develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance. UEL students are invited to join the adventure as a Crewmate!
WHEN DO THEY ARRIVE?
The sessions will run twice a day from 18 March - 22 March. Session times are 9am-12pm & 12pm-3pm.
WHAT DO PIRATES DO?
The Hackney Pirates offer local schools engagement sessions (creative writing workshops). The pop-up Pirates will use our proven engagement session, which works well with a class of children from Years 5 or 6. It also builds confidence in the creative writing process and knowledge of the ‘splurge & refine’ methodology.
During the session the group meets a Captain, who tells a tale of adventure at sea and being shipwrecked on an island. The Captain takes them on an immersive pirate-themed journey. Supported by volunteers, children write an imaginative story in response.
Working through our Writing Islands of Ideas, Planning, Splurge, Refine method, each child will create a piece of creative writing by the end of the session.
In order to build upon their achievements and confidence in their writing skills, the children’s writing is professionally designed into a book and printed.
A celebration assembly will be written so that each school can present the children with a printed copy of their work and share the achievements of their Young Pirates with the wider school community.
