National Apprenticeships Week celebration with Gillian Keegan MP

business management

Gillian Keegan MP got her start as an apprentice and is now a leading voice for apprentices in Parliament

The University of East London (UEL) will mark National Apprenticeships Week 2019 with several events celebrating our apprentices and their contributions to both UEL and their employers.

On 4 March, apprentices and and staff will come together for a special event with Gillian Keegan MP. The day will include a tour, talks, panel, networking over lunch, and a prize giveaway.

UEL has offered degree apprenticeships since 2016, and over 100 apprentices now study at UEL. Our degree apprenticeships include nursing associate, civil engineering, civil engineering site manager, geospatial mapping and science, teacher, digital and technology solutions professional, and chartered manager.

Special guest Gillian Keegan MP started work as an apprentice at Delco Electronics, a subsidiary of General Motors in Kirkby, when she was 16.  While learning about the manufacturing industry she was sponsored to do a degree in business studies at Liverpool John Moores University.

For the next 25 years she worked and lived abroad, working in the manufacturing, banking and IT industries. Most recently, she was the chief marketing officer for a global company in the travel technology sector. Prior to that, she was responsible for global customer sales and account management, and was based in Madrid for eight years. In 2010 Gillian spent a year studying a Sloan Fellowship master’s degree at London Business School, primarily to update her knowledge on digital technology and to develop her strategy and leadership skills.

In 2014, she switched her focus to politics. She was first elected as a local councillor in October 2014 and in May 2015 she stood as a parliamentary candidate in St Helens South and Whiston, Merseyside. Gillian is particularly interested in improving career opportunities for school leavers and attracting more business investment. She is also a big fan of high-quality apprenticeships, which gave her a start and helped create the foundation for her successful career.

This event is by invitation only.
