Full Circle: the Newham Community Opera
Full Circle is an original opera, performed by children, based on the life of UEL student Jonathan Lofulo
Newham Music presents Full Circle, a community opera based loosely on the life story of University of East London (UEL) student Jonathan Lofulo.
The opera is part of Newham Music's 2018’s Festival of Youth. Each summer, Newham Music invites hundreds of young people to participate in immersive musical activities and concerts through singing, playing, and performing at our Festival of Youth showcase. These interactive days are designed to celebrate the talent of every child throughout Newham.
Full Circle is the centrepiece of this year's festival.
Under the guidance of Newham Music, 250 pupils from five local schools collaborated with composers who have worked at the Royal Opera House to develop Full Circle, a production inspired by Jonathan's extraordinary life.
Jonathan, 29, moved to the UK as a child refugee fleeing the war-torn the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was raised by his older brother in east London and attended local schools.
An athletic youngster, he trained with both Arsenal and West Ham football academies but was easily distracted and failed to capitalise on the opportunities. He eventually fell in with the wrong crowd and ended up in prison for burglary.
While behind bars, Jonathan decided to turn his life around. Following his release, he enrolled at UEL and, through hard work and determination, earned a first-class degree in Education Studies in 2016.
He is now back at UEL studying for a master’s degree in Refugee Studies and hopes to work with troubled teenagers.
