Cass School of Education and Communities Seminar
Participatory Action Research Video Project on Student and Police Relations in New York City
Seminar speaker: Steve Goodman, Executive Director, Educational Video Center
In collaboration with The EVC Institute @ UEL : A 5 day community enquiry programme (funded by Civic Engagement) this presentation will discuss Youth Powered Change, a recent project with three classes in high schools serving struggling learners from marginalized communities in New York City. Facilitated by Goodman and the Educational Video Center, teachers engaged their students in collaborative video inquiries into police abuses that they have experienced in their schools and communities, and possible actions students can take to improve these problems. Clips of documentaries that the students produced will be screened, along with video clips of the participatory action research and civic engagement process the teachers were learning to use. Opportunities and challenges encountered in this case using a Freirian inspired approach to a problem-posing, dialogic pedagogy will also be discussed.
Trained as a journalist at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Steve Goodman is the founder and Executive Director of Educational Video Center (NYC). Steve has taught media in high schools and universities, has produced documentaries, written Teaching Youth Media: Literacy, Video Production & Social Change (Teachers College Press), and numerous articles about media and education.
Lunch will be provided at 12.00.
