Sconul Visitors

Important dates

FROM MONDAY 2nd OCTOBER 2017

To access UEL Libraries, you must show the following documentation to Security:

  • From 2nd October 2017: A green UEL library visitor card

Registration requirements for all SCONUL visitors

To use UEL libraries, you must first bring with you during staffed hours:

  1. A printed copy of your authorisation email
  2. A good quality passport size photo
  3. Your home university ID card

We will make you a UEL visitor’s card that you must bring each time you visit a UEL library.

Please note: VISITORS, INCLUDING SCONUL, WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER THE LIBRARY AFTER 9PM.

You can visit either Docklands or Stratford Library between 9am - 8pm Monday to Friday, although at certain busy times of the year we may restrict access to all SCONUL bands. This will be advertised on our website in advance.

Certain SCONUL bands will be able to borrow books from either of our libraries, but you will not be able to request books online.

Computer facilities are not available to SCONUL visitors but we are members of the Eduroam scheme. Students are advised to try and log in to Eduroam at their home institution first, and if they have any issues they should seek assistance from their own institution's IT helpdesk.

Summer Vacation access

During UEL  summer vacation we admit students from other SCONUL universities on
a reference basis on production of valid home university ID only i.e.
without requiring the email authorisation or SCONUL card. Computer
facilities are not available to SCONUL visitors but we are members of
the Eduroam scheme. Students are advised to try and log in to Eduroam
at their home institution first, and if they have any issues they
should seek assistance from their own institution's IT helpdesk. If you
have any questions about SCONUL access, please get in touch with Catherine Johnson (Docklands) or Florence Achen-Owor (Stratford) for more details.

Borrowing books

Some Sconul Access visitors can borrow books (pdf) (Band A, B and C).

Alumni passport

If you once studied at UEL you can use our libraries free of charge for reference throughout the year, or for £50 per year if you wish to borrow. You need to hold an Alumni Passport, available from the Alumni Office for £15.

Your Alumni Passport gives you free access to any UEL library for reference. Computer access is not available to Alumni card holders.

If you want to borrow books, just bring your Alumni passport to any Library desk and you will be added to the library system.

Don't forget to bring:

1. Proof of address:

  • Recent utility/council tax bill (no more than 3 months old)
  • Recent bank statement (no more than 3 months old)
  • Valid driving licence
2. £50.00 annual fee (cash or credit/debit card only)

Please note, we need at least three working days to process each application.

Local teachers and further education lecturers

If you are a local teacher or FE lecturer from a Newham state-funded school, you can use any UEL Library free of charge for reference or borrowing.

Local students from FE colleges and 6th forms who wish to visit a campus library for research must be accompanied by a lecturer and teacher, and a prior appointment must be made with the Campus Manager of the library they wish to visit.

Applications must be made in writing to the Campus Manager of the library you wish to use: Catherine Johnson (Docklands) or Florence Achen-Owor (Stratford).

Please note, we need at least three working days to process each application.

All other visitors

All other visitors who wish to use our Libraries for the purpose of research will need to make a written application, either by letter or email, to the Campus Manager of the Library they wish to use.

Applicants will need to check the Library Search and specify the material they need to consult. If the application is successful, a one-off visit can be arranged. All applicants must be over 18 years of age.

Until your application has been processed you will not be able to use the library.
