Over the last two years, UEL public health students in their final year of study, in partnership with Newham Council, have been instrumental in helping to establish neighbourhood health centres in Newham. The centres are a key part of the Council’s service delivery structure for improving the health of residents.
There are currently eight fully functioning health centres in Newham, each reflecting a particular community. Using Civic Engagement Fund money, UEL students helped the centres establish priorities for their respective populations, using local residents’ input and support. It is believed that the evolution of the community centres as health generators will have a great impact on the health outcomes of the borough.
The students’ experience and their activities have been used as case studies by other Public Health students.
