Why choose UEL for a law Clearing course?

Students on our law clearing courses have access to the Royal Docks School of Business and Law’s tailored facilities, including the department’s own Mooting Room and Mock Court Room, a unique learning facility where you’ll hear court cases recreated.

Studying on a law degree at UEL means you’ll learn how the law is made and administered while exploring the relationship between law, society and all of us as individuals. You’ll be learning the fundamentals of law from the first day of your law degree, starting with an introduction to legal skills and methods and moving through specialist subjects and how the law works, including criminal, human rights, land, constitutional, and contract law.

Learn protocols, etiquette and how to work in a courtroom as you study on your law course – as well as having the chance to volunteer at our Legal Advice Centre alongside local solicitors working to support real people with real cases. The Legal Advice Centre specialises in cases involving contract/consumer law, family law, landlord/tenant law and welfare rights. The Centre also has a special project in partnership with the Sycamore Trust to provide free legal advice to those with autism.

Our law course team has expertise in many areas including international law, human rights, financial technology regulation, public law, European social policy, world trade regulation, international business law, urban law and land rights, Islamic law and finance.

Speakers in recent years in our law courses have ranged from Lord Neuberger, former president of the UK Supreme Court to Michael Ignatieff, Canadian politician and President of the Central European University.

Further study options at UEL include LLM programmes in Business and Financial Law, Human Rights Advocacy, FinTech Law, International Law and Legal Practice, as well as a MPhil/PhD in Social Sciences.

Real legal and professional practice is built into every course in this subject area. From your second year, you can volunteer at UEL's Legal Advice Centre in Stratford, giving free written legal advice to members of the public under the supervision of practising solicitors. The Centre holds training provider status from the Solicitors Regulation Authority, meaning the experience you gain is officially recognised.

Mooting and mock trials take place in an on-campus simulated courtroom. Criminology and policing students carry out supervised research projects, take optional internship modules and can arrange a full placement year between years two and three. Across all courses, guest speakers, court visits and fieldwork with community partners add professional depth you can talk about at interview.

UEL law students don't just study the law, they practise it. The Legal Advice Centre helps real people in the local community with genuine legal problems, from housing and family disputes to immigration and criminal matters, all supervised by qualified solicitors. Nurun Choudhury began as a UEL law student, volunteered at the Centre, completed her training contract there and qualified as a solicitor in March 2024 and then became the Lead Supervising Solicitor and a Lecturer in Law.

On the criminology side, Professor Julia Davidson OBE, Director of UEL's Online Harms and Cybercrime Unit, advises UNICEF, the Home Office, Europol and OFCOM. Her research fed directly into the Online Safety Act 2023, and she helped develop a child online protection policy for the Rwandan Government, now adopted internationally as a Global Safety Toolkit. When you study criminology here, you study where the research actually changes things.

Are UEL's Law degrees recognised under the SQE route to becoming a solicitor?

Yes. Our LLB (Hons) courses provide a rigorous grounding in the foundations of legal knowledge. To fully support the updated Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) framework, UEL embeds foundational SQE preparation into the curriculum. We also offer a dedicated LLM Legal Practice (with SQE Preparation) pathway post-graduation to seamlessly transition you into practicing law under the new regulations.

What practical training facilities do Law students use on campus?

Law students train in our state-of-the-art Mock Court Room at the Stratford campus. This specialised facility allows you to participate in simulated legal trials, practice advocacy, and build courtroom confidence under the guidance of legal experts. You will also gain full access to premium legal research databases, including Westlaw, LexisNexis, and HeinOnline.

What non-lawyer careers can I pursue with a UEL Law degree?

While many graduates become solicitors or barristers, an LLB from UEL develops highly transferable skills in analytical reasoning, research, and contract evaluation. Our graduates successfully secure corporate positions in compliance, human resource management, corporate risk consultancy, civil service, political research, financial regulation, and NGO advocacy.
