Pride Month at UEL: A time for unity, visibility, and joy
Published on 10 Jun 2025
The University of East London stands proud as an institution that wholeheartedly celebrates diversity and inclusion. We're excited to celebrate Pride Month this June and look forward to London's spectacular Pride parade.
Understanding the significance
Pride represents far more than a single celebration - it's a powerful movement commemorating the LGBTQ+ community's ongoing fight for equality, acceptance, and human rights. At UEL, we recognise that understanding Pride means acknowledging both the historical struggles and the joyous celebrations that define the event.
The main Pride in London parade typically takes place on the last Saturday of June, transforming the capital into a vibrant celebration of love and identity. In 2025, it’s taking place on 5 July.
Pride's historical roots
What is Pride?
The modern Pride movement traces back to the Stonewall riots of 1969, when LGBTQ+ individuals stood up against discrimination and police harassment. This pivotal moment sparked a global movement for equality that continues today.
Pride has evolved significantly since the first London Pride march in 1972. Today, Pride in London represents one of the world's largest and most inclusive celebrations, attracting millions of participants and supporters from across the globe.
UEL's commitment to diversity
The University of East London has always been a beacon for diversity and inclusion. Our multicultural campus reflects London itself, where students from over 120 countries come together to learn, grow, and celebrate their authentic selves. During Pride Month, we amplify our commitment to creating safe spaces where every individual can thrive regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Educational opportunities
At UEL, we believe education plays a crucial role in fostering understanding and acceptance. Throughout Pride Month, our academic departments organise special lectures and workshops that explore LGBTQ+ history, rights, and contemporary issues. These sessions help students understand the deeper significance of what Pride represents in terms of social justice and human rights.
Our library curates special collections featuring LGBTQ+ authors, historians, and activists, providing resources for students interested in learning more about the movement's rich history and ongoing evolution.
Looking forward
As we celebrate Pride Month 2025, UEL remains committed to being a university that not only welcomes diversity but actively champions it. We understand that true support comes through consistent action, inclusive policies, and creating environments where every member of our community feels valued and respected.
Pride continues to evolve, and so does our university's approach to supporting LGBTQ+ students and staff. Through ongoing dialogue, education, and celebration, we ensure that the spirit of Pride extends far beyond June, creating a year-round culture of acceptance and joy.
Join us this Pride Month as we celebrate the beautiful diversity that makes UEL, and follow our UEL staff LGBTQ+ network on Instagram.
Happy Pride Month from all of us at the University of East London!
