Celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the University of East London

At the University of East London (UEL), diversity and inclusion are principles we live every day. As we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), we reaffirm our commitment to accessibility and disability inclusion. creating an environment where every student and staff member has the opportunity to thrive, feel empowered, and access the support they need to succeed.
Observed annually on 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a global call to action: to promote understanding, break down barriers, and advocate for the rights and well-being of Disabled People. For UEL, this day serves as a reminder of how far we have come - and the work that still lies ahead - as we strive to build a truly inclusive and accessible university community.
Championing accessibility and equal opportunities
UEL is proud of its long-standing commitment to widening participation. We recognise that accessibility is not simply about adjusting physical spaces, but about rethinking how we teach, support, and engage with one another. Our Disability and Dyslexia Service (DDS) works closely with students to ensure they receive personalised and proactive support - from learning support plans and assistive technologies to a range of 1-2-1 support. specialist mentoring and study skills coaching. As well as support for students, UEL staff are supported through HR and the development of a disability policy for staff members.
Building an inclusive community culture
While policies and resources matter, inclusion ultimately flourishes through culture. At UEL, culture is shaped by its people. From our student networks to our academic departments, we see daily examples of what an inclusive community looks like. Staff and Students champion accessibility improvements on campus, create platforms for conversation and advocacy, and collaborate to embed inclusive practices across curricula.
Marking IDPD also gives us an opportunity to spotlight the achievements of disabled students and staff. Their resilience, creativity, and leadership enrich our university and challenge us to think more expansively about what inclusion truly means.
Looking ahead: UEL’s vision for inclusion
As we celebrate IDPD, UEL’s vision extends beyond a single day. We are committed to continuous improvement—listening to lived experiences, enhancing campus accessibility, expanding disability support, and fostering a culture where everyone feels valued. Our ambition is to ensure that disabled staff and students are prepared to build and grow their careers even before their time at UEL is finished.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities calls on all of us to acknowledge the diversity of the human experience.
