AgilePM v3: the project management upgrade you didn’t know you needed
Published on 30 Jun 2025
It began with an idea, a borrowed meeting room, and far too many sticky notes.
A couple of years ago, we tried to launch a mental health awareness campaign. It was personal, powerful, and painfully chaotic. We had vision boards, Canva designs, and good intentions. We didn’t have an agreed business case, decision-making clarity, or a way of adapting when one of our guest speakers cancelled last-minute. The campaign limped across the finish line, but it could have been so much more.
What we lacked wasn’t passion. It was agility with accountability.
That’s where AgilePM v3 comes in.
What is AgilePM?
AgilePM stands for Agile Project Management.
Originally developed by the DSDM Consortium (now the Agile Business Consortium) and globally certified by APMG International, it's one of the world’s most popular project management methods, designed to combine flexibility with structure. It helps creative teams deliver on time, on budget, and without burning out.
The newly launched AgilePM version 3 (v3) came out in March 2025, and is the biggest update in over a decade
What’s new in AgilePM v3?
AgilePM v3 keeps the core of what made the method effective - its 8 guiding principles, clear roles, and iterative delivery. But it’s now more user-friendly, scalable, and inclusive than ever before.
Here are the biggest changes:
- Improved scalability
AgilePM v3 works just as well for small teams running two-week sprints as it does for enterprise-level programmes. Whether you’re planning a university hackathon or leading a digital transformation project in, the method flexes to fit.
- Stronger focus on people
Version 3 places greater emphasis on team wellbeing, empowerment, and communication. Leadership is redefined as servant leadership, leading by enabling, not controlling.
- Simplified roles and responsibilities
It’s easier to understand who does what. The new version trims the jargon and clarifies how roles collaborate, from the Business Sponsor to the Solution Developer. This simplification is key to effective agile project management.
- Integrated governance
AgilePM v3 provides real governance structures, making it ideal for public sector and regulated environments, sectors where many UEL students end up working or researching.
- Better support for digital and hybrid teams
The guidance now aligns with tools like Jira, Miro, and Microsoft Teams, making it feel more natural for working from home.
Why AgilePM v3 matters at UEL
University life is full of projects, from dissertations and design sprints to student societies and entrepreneurial ideas. But we’re not often taught how to manage these projects systematically.
AgilePM v3 gives you:
- Clarity: Who’s responsible for what? What’s being delivered this week? How will we handle change?
- Speed: Work in timeboxes, adapt quickly, and focus on what matters most.
- Collaboration: AgilePM encourages empowered teams, not top-down control. Perfect for student life.
- Employability: Employers value candidates who can plan, adapt, and deliver. AgilePM is your credibility boost. Proficiency in agile project management is a significant credibility boost on your CV.
And because the method is scalable, what you learn running a group project now will apply just as well when you’re managing multimillion-pound initiatives later.
How does it work? (The 2 minute version)
AgilePM runs on an iterative work cycle, called a development timebox, where you plan, deliver, review, and adapt.
Here’s a quick breakdown of its structure:
Element | What it means |
---|---|
Principles | The 8 values that guide every AgilePM project (e.g., deliver on time, communicate continuously). |
Processes | Steps from pre-project to post-project, with clear checkpoints. |
People and roles | Specific responsibilities for everyone (e.g., Project Manager, Product Owner etc). |
Products | Not just ‘stuff’ you deliver, but key artefacts like the Business Case and Risk Log. |
Practices | How you actually work, timeboxing, MoSCoW prioritisation (Must have, Should have, Could have, Won’t have), etc. |
You don’t need to memorise all of this immediately. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll start applying these tools intuitively, whether you're planning your dissertation or co-ordinating a local campaign.
Is It just for tech people?
Absolutely not.
AgilePM has its roots in software development, but it’s for anyone leading change.
At UEL, for instance:
- Visual arts students could use AgilePM to manage media campaigns, client briefs, or art exhibitions.
- Nursing students might apply it to design and pilot new service models or outreach programmes, iteratively gathering feedback for continuous improvement.
- Anyone working on sustainability initiatives could use agile project management to test local climate solutions in stages, adapting based on feedback.
What about certification?
Obtaining AgilePM v3 certification is about learning a way of working that boosts your confidence, sharpens your decision-making, and prepares you for any professional challenge.
Foundation Level: Perfect for students or early-career professionals. Covers principles, roles, and key processes.
Practitioner Level: Takes it further. Prepares you to lead AgilePM projects in real organisational settings.
