BA (Hons) Communication Studies, 2007
Elizabeth graduated from UEL in Communications Studies in 2007, since then she has gone on leaps and bounds, currently working as a Freelance editor and writer; as well as looking after her own company Beth Harlen Media Ltd.
Elizabeth gives UEL the credit for giving her the confidence to go after her dream of being a writer – so much so that she graduated in June 2007 and became editor of a b2b consumer electronics magazine, Sound Vision Install (SVI), in August 2007.
Elizabeth earned that position by working hard every step of the way and now, eight years later, she has been editor of four separate magazines in unique industries. She has handled all the commercial content for a publishing house in Cambridge, and currently runs her own media company.
Elizabeth was unfortunately very ill during her A-Levels and says her results certainly reflected that, but UEL gave her a chance and the opportunity to study the course she had dreamed of studying. She loved the thought of studying in the capital so was over the moon when she got the chance to study at UEL.
We asked Elizabeth what she enjoyed most about her time at UEL and she said, “What really made an impression on me was the opportunity I had to mix with people I hadn’t previously come across. UEL is a wonderful melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, orientation, ages and all manner of backgrounds. It all adds to the academic discussion, and I learnt a few new drinking games along the way. Beyond the academic learning, UEL pushes you to expand your thinking and explore the possibilities that you might not previously have considered.”
She urges students to make the most of the university experience as the years spent at university are where you have the time and opportunity to investigate new ideas, to develop new ways of thinking, and to explore endless future possibilities.
