UEL Postgraduate Academy: shaping the future of undergraduate healthcare education in East London
The arrival of UEL’s new medical school in 2027 marks an exciting opportunity to redefine excellence in undergraduate healthcare education. To prepare, the Postgraduate Academy (PGA) provides a dedicated forum for educators to develop skills, share expertise, and build collaborative networks across the Health Campus.
The 2026 programme features a series of online and in-person sessions at our Stratford campus, designed to showcase how faculty work together and support the interprofessional aims of “learning with, from, and about” other professions. These practical, theory-informed sessions are tailored to meet the needs of educators across all disciplines and help ensure teaching methods are innovative, effective, and aligned with the evolving healthcare landscape.
More than a training programme, the PGA is a professional community. It brings educators together to connect with colleagues, refine their teaching practice, and play an integral role in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals at UEL.

Feedback: Turning Pandora's box into a treasure trove
About the event:
Feedback is one of the most powerful tools in medical education — yet also one of the most anxiety-provoking. In this interactive webinar, Feedback: Turning Pandora’s Box into a Treasure Trove, we will explore why feedback so often triggers defensiveness and disengagement in learners, and how educators can transform it into a catalyst for growth, confidence, and safer patient care. Drawing on educational evidence and real clinical teaching scenarios, the session introduces a simple, practical framework for giving and receiving feedback that works in busy undergraduate settings. Participants will gain tools to separate feedback from assessment, deliver behaviour-focused and psychologically safe feedback, and equip students with a clear structure for using feedback effectively in consultations and clinical placements.
Date: 2026, January 21, Wednesday
Location: Online
Time: 1:00pm-1:45pm
Speaker: Prof Anwar Ali Khan FRCGP
Who Decides What’s Professional?
About the event:
Teaching and assessment of professionalism for our health care students is being increasingly complex as we navigate the expectations of the regulators, the universities, the public and of the students themselves. Students feel professionalism is too often defined by what is 'unprofessional' but struggle to understand why low-level concerns such as attendance may be an issue. This webinar will be presented by an educator with experience of GMC Fitness to Practise hearings, who has researched the understanding of professionalism and will explore some of these challenges.
Date: 2026, February 18, Wednesday
Location: Online
Time: 1:00pm-1:45pm
Speaker: Prof Joanne Harris
Reflection: can it be taught and or assessed?
About the event:
Reflection, in its many forms, is possibly the single most important tool in complex clinical learning, but are our students developing as genuinely reflective practitioners or are they simply learning how to pass simplistic assessments through performative approaches? Dr Leedham-Green will share some of her research insights into 'death by reflection' from focus groups she has conducted with both students and clinical teachers, before delving into the science of successful learning including strategies that foster genuine reflectivity in the interests of patient care.
Date: 2026, March 17, Tuesday
Location: Online
Time: 1:00pm-1:45pm
Speaker: Dr Kay Leedham-Green

We will then discuss potential avenues to address these challenges that benefit all students, with many of these challenges centre around sense of belonging and community.
