Diabetes Outreach at UEL

UEL’s Diabetes Outreach Initiative developed from the annual diabetes conference launched in 2018. Our outreach brings together UEL staff, partner organisations, universities, NHS professionals, local authorities, charities, community groups, students, carers, and people living with diabetes.

Some initiatives we have run include:

  • Diabetes workshops delivered through GP practices in Newham
  • Student volunteering with community pharmacies
  • A short continuing professional development (CPD) course for Health Care Assistants
  • The Diabetes Café, delivered with Public Health Newham and the Stratford and West Ham Neighbourhoods at Stratford Library

Together with the UEL Neighbourhood Health Hub (NHH), these initiatives aim to support people living with diabetes or pre-diabetes across Newham.

The 2026 programme begins with a pilot diabetes workshop at the NHH and Stratford Library in March, followed by the annual conference in May.

The workshops:

  • Explain diabetes in simple terms
  • Address misconceptions and cultural barriers
  • Provide practical self-care strategies

They are open to all ages and include basic health checks and medication guidance.

Annual Diabetes Conference 2026

This year, the 7th Annual Diabetes conference will be addressing the impact of diabetes on long-term conditions and exploring innovative preventive strategies within the local community.

Every 2nd Tuesday of the month

Time: 12.00 – 13:00 pm drop-in for any of the following

  • Wellbeing inquiries
  • Health Checks – blood pressure and weight checks
  • Review of blood pressure patterns

Every 4th Tuesday of the month

Time: 12.00 – 13:00 pm, drop-in for the following

  • Exercises and Qi gong for diabetics facilitated by an instructor
  • Diet and nutrition advice
  • Educational leaflets
  • One-to-one educational advice/consultation
