Sculpture Workshop
What We Do
Examples of mould types include plaster waste-moulds and piece-moulds. Plaster can also be used as a modelling and carving medium. We also make flexible moulds made using latex, alginate or silicone rubber. Work can be cast into materials such as plaster, concrete, clay-slip, wax and resins. Hot metal casting into bronze and aluminium is done using the lost wax process. The moulds are dewaxed in the kiln and the metal is melted in the furnace.
The ceramic facility has expanded in recent years and we have a new top-loading kin used solely for ceramic work. A clay printer in the Digital Fabrication workshop opens up possibilities for hybrid making processes combining digital and handcrafted skills.
The metal workshop is mainly set up for working steel. We have a variety of machines for cutting shaping and joining metal. There are three types of welder including a TIG welder that can be used to weld bronze. Other metal working facilities include a brazing hearth, sheet metal folder, roller and guillotine.
