exploring East London
Our capital is a thriving, multicultural hub, and the University of East London is right in the heart of it all. East London is home to innovative businesses, creative communities, and a wealth of green spaces.
To help you explore our fascinating city, we've collected our favourite picks to keep you connected with the vibrant people and world-renowned institutions that make London so special.
Engage with art at the TATE
Located on the south bank of the Thames, Tate Modern is a former power station that now fuels London's passion for modern art. Many of our distinguished academics have exhibited their work in this iconic building. Our students have also offered fresh perspectives on pop art in the institution's first-ever live-streamed art project.
Even if you can't visit in person, you can still experience the gallery online. Explore rooms and artworks, view images, and listen to a curator's talk through a digital walk on the theme of migration. You can also watch performance art, as dancers respond to the collection at Tate Britain.
Get reading with the British Library
The British Library receives a copy of every book printed in the UK. Its permanent exhibition is home to some of the world's most important manuscripts, including the Magna Carta, a Gutenberg Bible, and the original handwritten copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
You can take a trip down the rabbit hole yourself by exploring the library's vast collection online.
Celebrate art and design with the Victoria & Albert Museum
The V&A, home to one of the world's greatest art and design collections, has strong ties to our university, collaborating with us on course development and delivery.
In addition to its main location, the V&A has a museum of childhood in Bethnal Green and is opening a new site in Stratford's East Bank. If you're curious about art and design, you can go behind the scenes with the BBC documentary, Secrets of the Museum. You can also take a journey through 5,000 years of human creativity by exploring the V&A's extensive online collection.
Get active in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
We all need to get our daily dose of exercise for both our mental and physical well-being. In East London, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is the perfect place to go.
This park beautifully combines world-renowned sporting venues with tranquil green spaces. You can:
- Go for a jog and enjoy the blooming trees.
- Marvel at iconic venues like the Copper Box Arena and Lee Valley VeloPark.
- Take a peaceful walk along the canal and spot the ever-changing street art around Hackney Wick.
