Nitin Saini's story
Nitin Saini's story
My father encouraged me to study abroad to experience different cultures and business environments, which ultimately broadened my perspective. This also enriched my personal and professional trajectory. My stint with retail began when I took on a part-time role at Marks and Spencer in London while pursuing my MBA. Working there exposed me to the intricacies of retail operations, from managing various departments to understanding customer engagement strategies.
I was able to apply the knowledge I gained during my studies at UEL to my own experiences in the retail sector. Concepts like human resources management and conflict resolution that I learned in class became invaluable tools when dealing with teams and operational challenges in real-world retail settings.
Comparing business environments between the UK and India back in 2003, I noticed significant differences, particularly in the evolution and adoption of retail technologies. London, where I worked, was highly advanced in terms of retail and technology integration, whereas the landscape in India was still catching up at the time. However, with India's rapid digital transformation in recent years, the gap has significantly narrowed.
My time in London was not just about work; it was also a vibrant cultural experience. Living in a melting pot like London exposed me to people from all walks of life and cultures, fostering an enriching environment both academically and socially.
To all current and future UEL students, I emphasise the importance of balancing studies with exploration and fun. While academic pursuits are crucial, so too are the experiences and memories created outside the classroom. Cherishing moments with friends and immersing oneself in the cultural fabric of the city/ country enriches the educational journey and creates lasting memories.
My personal motto, "Learn more and Earn more," underscores the importance of continuous learning and growth. It's a principle that has guided me throughout my career, driving me to constantly upgrade my skills and knowledge to adapt to the ever-changing retail landscape. By imparting this ethos to others, I believe we can collectively strive for excellence and success in all our endeavours.
