Initially fascinated by IT engineering, my interest deepened during my third and final years, particularly towards cybersecurity. While researching universities for further studies, I discovered that the University of East London offered a specialised master’s programme in Information Security and Digital Forensics, unlike many universities in Australia and the US, which mainly provided general computer science degrees. This led me to London in 2019, where UEL’s dual focus on information security and digital forensics appealed to me.
Transitioning from India to the UK was a significant cultural shift. Living in a multicultural environment in London taught me a lot, from enjoying local foods like fish and chips to engaging in a diverse learning community. At UEL, I participated in seminars, networked with industry leaders, and attended a Cloud Expo, which enriched my understanding of the market and cybersecurity trends.
Post-graduation, I returned to India and began working as a Cyber Threat Analyst for a company with its headquarters in the UK. My role involves monitoring network activity, conducting threat analyses, and addressing security incidents—a demanding but crucial job akin to an online police officer's work.
For anyone aspiring to enter cybersecurity, I can’t stress enough the importance of mastering fundamental concepts like networking and programming, gaining practical experience through internships, and obtaining relevant industry certifications. Effective communication skills are essential, as is engaging with cybersecurity communities and attending conferences.
