Janet Sutton's story
Janet Sutton's story
I was born in Kenya and moved to Parma, Italy at the age of nine. I began my career in HR with a background in psychology. During my free time, I worked in a charity to help feed the elderly. Through this volunteering experience, I developed a passion for caring for those in need. I quit my job and did a one-year nursing course in Italy where I started working in hospitals.
After having lived in Italy since the age of 9, I decided to move to England because I had family there and many deem England as the land of opportunity. My initial few months in England weren’t easy. The culture was different, the weather was cold, and the houses were small. I would cry and say that I wanted to return to Italy. However, I powered through, and eventually made some amazing friends, got a job, and things began to work out for me.
I applied for a role in Harley Street at the London Clinic. I didn’t know if they’d give me the job, but something within me encouraged me to go inside. The interview went well, and I had a gut feeling that I got the job. I remember checking my phone any chance I could to see if they had rung me back. Eventually, I saw that they had left a voicemail informing me that I had gotten the role. It was an incredible feeling that I’ll never forget.
I have been working there ever since and now they’re funding my apprenticeship at the University of East London to progress to become a registered nurse. My experience in the course has been amazing, especially my course leader Stephen Thompson who has supported me throughout my journey.
After I become a registered nurse, I plan on working for the NHS (The Royal Marsden Hospital). I strongly believe that it is the NHS that makes you a nurse and the experience is invaluable.
