Stratford Health Campus Development
Project Overview
The Stratford Health Campus is a transformative initiative within the University of East London's Connected Campus Programme, designed to create dynamic, interconnected spaces for study, work, and community life. This new campus will include:
- State-of-the-Art Academic Health Building: Featuring flexible lecture theatres, practice centres, a prototype University Primary Care facility, and extensive placement opportunities.

- 16-storey Residential Building: Providing 650 student rooms to ease local housing pressures, alongside wellness-focused amenities, including a nursery, gym, and wellness centre.

- Accessible Green Spaces: Incorporating 0.32 hectares of public green space, walking routes, and social areas for relaxation and connection.

Upon completion, this campus will prepare students for careers in the NHS, addressing the projected need for 72,000 additional health workers by 2031.
Our Vision
The Stratford Health Campus is set to become Newham's primary multi-professional health hub, with aims to:
- Expand the Health Community: Doubling our on-campus community to foster training, research, and outreach.
- Train Tomorrow’s Workforce: Developing a future-ready health and social care workforce.
- Provide Exceptional Facilities: Dedicated spaces for education, student housing, and green spaces for community well-being.
- Foster Community Connections: Creating a welcoming environment where students live, study, and connect with the local community.
Commitment to Community Engagement
The success of the Stratford Health Campus depends on strong community involvement. Recognising health challenges in Newham, we aim to engage residents, gather feedback, and promote collaboration to address health inequalities. Community members are invited to reach out, provide input, and even request UEL’s participation in local events. To get in touch, please email us at communityvoice@uel.ac.uk.
Sustainability at the Heart of Development
We are committed to sustainability and aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 through:
- Eco-Friendly Design: Using sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems, including air source heat pumps and solar panels.
- Green Public Spaces: Providing 0.32 hectares of green space and planting 50 new trees, with a target to meet the WELL Building Standard 'Platinum' and BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certifications.
- Accessible, Car-Free Areas: Developing pedestrian-friendly routes that improve connectivity and enhance well-being for all users.
Community-Centred Approach
Collaboration is key to addressing complex health challenges. Through partnerships with NHS Trusts, hospitals, local councils, and the One East London Network, we are creating health solutions with the input and expertise of over 60 primary care practitioners. Additionally, we value community voices, ensuring our initiatives reflect local needs and priorities for improved health outcomes.
A Legacy of Progress
The Stratford Health Campus builds on our existing infrastructure and services, including:
- Health Hub at USS Campus: Offering free health checks, wellness advice, and GP registration to East London residents.
- Simulated Training Hub: A £10 million facility with VR rooms and simulated patient wards to support immersive healthcare education.
- Future Medical School: Application to the GMC is underway to establish a new medical school by 2027, focusing on a primary care-centred MBBS programme.
