Stratford Campus Development
Stratford Campus Development
Following constructive engagement with the local community, UEL staff and students, and Newham Council, plans to redevelop our Stratford Water Lane campus were approved on 20 February at a meeting with Newham Council’s Strategic Planning Committee. Greater London Authority (GLA) will now complete final due diligence and then we will be clear to proceed.
We expect to begin preparing for construction in Autumn of this year (2024) and the total duration of the build is still being determined as we finalise detailed plans.
Stratford Health Campus
The campus will include a new academic building home to lecture theatres and teaching rooms, a residential building with 650 student bedrooms to relieve pressure on local housing, a wellness centre, staff and student nursery, and green social spaces available to everyone.
Students will be able to live, study and socialise on a site specifically setup to equip them for careers in the NHS – which reports the need for 72,000 more nurses and health-workers by 2031. As well as providing industry-leading graduates for the next generation of health professionals, the student village will take pressure off local housing, and 24-hour surveillance and security will make the area safer for everyone.
If you’d like to learn more about the development, please take a look at our Summary of Proposals, which provides a deeper look at our plans and how they will benefit students, staff and the local community.
A Connected Campus
We want the local community to feel part of our new health campus, which is why we’re now working on a detailed communications plan to keep local residents and the broader community up to date with how the development is progressing.
The development will feature 0.32 hectares (around half the size of a football pitch) of publicly accessible green-space, plus 50 new trees for the community to enjoy. It will also feature a wellness centre and gym which we would like to open-up to the local community too.
We’re also looking at how we might collaborate with community groups in the development of the campus, and we’ve begun talks with local youth mental-health charity, Ashok’s Vision (opens in new window) to explore how we might offer young people in Newham the chance to take part in gardening and planting activities on site.
This development is part of our Connected Campus programme – the University of East London’s multimillion-pound investment to create more pioneering, vibrant and welcoming spaces for people to study, work and live.
